I have a friend that plays an Shobud who has been looking for a Profex II, I have came to the conclusion that they really don't exist anymore, something so great, I can not help but wonder why Peavey ever quit making them - maybe its because us steel guitar players are a bit too picky?? what do you guys think, about the profex delema [probably some bad spelling here!

It depends, Tom. If you LIKE having to write a different patch for each amount of reverb you'll use, with no easy way to tweak a parameter on the fly, they're cool.
I tried to like them. Was completely unable to get past the frustration.

There were some issues with the Tubefex but I had the rotor pot and battery mod. I've had no issues with it since.
I used a Profex II while my Tubefex was away for mods and the Profex just did not sound in any way as good as the Tubefex. What was missing with the profex was that tube tone I was getting out of my solid state amp with the Tubefex.
So I just did without until my Tubefex got back. |

Bo, did you get the Tubefex with Newman settings already in or transfer them from Profex... or...? |

I understand the main reason these units, and several others, that used that card reader part, were discontinued, was because the OEM quit making them. The card readers worked well and were durable, but if you can't buy any more of them then you stuck.

I think the "Forum Members" should go together and buy a Profex II memory card and have it available to borrow then send to the next one needing to use it.
I have one and very seldom need to use it but when I do it is very helpful.

You might want to post the source. There are many on here who need the card, and would probably pay that much for one.
I believe the Profex 2 has MIDI. Has anyone checked into the possibility of using MIDI to send files to and from a computer? I imagine you can't, but I seem to remember that you can do a MIDI dump on the Profex 2. MIDI would have been a much smarter move than those stupid cards.

Ken Fox told me how to download from one Profex II to another using a midi cable. Really, if we had one community property card it could float from one member to the next. Let the last user hold it until another is going to have to change a battery or install batteryless mod he could ask the last user to mail it to him, then hold it until someone else needed it. If we are all trustworthy that would work fine. I believe there are still very many Profex II's in use.

The most common cards available are ones made for old Roland gear. We only need 32Kb for the Profex, but lately it's hard to find anything other than the M512, although sometimes an M256 will pop up on eBay.
These things have an internal battery that sometimes goes out, but replacements are available. I had to change one a few years ago. If the battery dies, you will lose what's on the card, but if you already have the info in the ProFex, you can reload it onto the card once you put in the new battery and format the card. Sounds harder than it is.

It's been a long time, but I think that is the same card that my old Roland D50 synth used. You might be able to find them on a keyboard or Roland forum.

I just want to clarify my previous post. The "card reader" I was referring to was the unit mounted inside the Profex 2, and other devices Peavey made. They worked very well, but those reading units were discontinued by the Original manufacturer and Peavey couldn't get them anymore. Rather than retool all those devices, they simply dropped them and moved on.
I think the Profex 2 was one unit that would have been successful if reworked for a USB interface. It is one terrific processor. IMHO Peavey really missed a big boat there!
And, yes, the cards are still available if you look for them, as mentioned above.

There are so many more options in a tubefex and the tone is so much better that I just could not ever be satisfied with a Profex II.
When I first got my tubefex I ask around what presets other Players were using.
Got those settings from Newmans site and re-programed them into the Tubefex in the Tube Mode. I only kept 5 of those settings and finally stopped using them all together.
I just accidentally stumbled onto one of the guitar presets in my tubefex and I modified it a little and programed 5 variations of it and now that's all I use. I don't even have the Newman settings in my tubefex anymore. |

If you have a tubefex.
Below is the preset and 4 variations that I love and use on all my PSGs including my Stage One.
One of the secrets is the mids in the 3 band EQ are cranked all the way up.
Sure you can program something similar to this into your profex II but sorry it just will not cut it.
