HSGA's 2001 convention in Honolulu is slated for April 30 through May 2 at the Queen Kapi`olani Hotel in Waikiki. This is a great location-next to Kapiolani Park and a block from the beach. Some of the rooms have great views of Diamond Head. Note also that May Day, May 1, falls during the convention. This is a special holiday in Hawaii and is a good time to be there. A few years ago Barbara and I attended the program at Honaunau School on the Big Island on May Day-lots of music, leis, and hula.
HSGA members will find reservation forms for both hotel and convention in the Fall "HSGA Quarterly", just out on October 20.
The annual HSGA Steel Guitar Ho`olaule`a is scheduled for Sunday, April 29, at Ala Wai Clubhouse Auditorium.
A second optional week is planned for the Island of Kaua`i. If you haven't had a chance to explore the Garden Island, this is a good way to do it-stay in a nice motel on the beach with bunch of other Hawaiian guitarists, with lots of musical opportunities each day.

Basil...if YOU show up, everyone will wonder how you do it ! I've always been most impressed with your great steel work and anyone who is unfamiliar with Basil Henrigues should make it a point to be in Waikiki next spring...(John Marsden sent me tapes of you playing years ago at the Castaways...excellent stuff, pal.) |

I'll see you there Doug.
I am hoping that by just being in the Islands my steel playing will achieve a more 'poi' type of sound as opposed to that 'tuna casserole with crushed Ritz crackers' feel it has today. ![](http://www.b0b.com/forum/wink.gif) [This message was edited by Gerald Ross on 28 October 2000 at 04:33 AM.] |

Hi George,
Kudos !! not deserved, I'm living (Just) on my past reputation.
Joking aside, will we see YOU there ?.
THAT would be something to behold. I know you used to go to the convention quite regularly, how about this time ?.
BTW I have been working here in Ireland for the past six months for the dept. of Education, teaching Pedal and non pedal steel at the Central academy of Music Technology and Performing Arts, and have quite a few promising students.
I'll send you a CDR of them soon George.[This message was edited by basilh on 28 October 2000 at 06:43 AM.] |

Bas...sorry, I didn't mean to dwell on your past accomplishments (which are very impressive, I might add). You have sent me later tapes which I should tell you are great. But the one song that has always stuck in my mind to the point whenever I hear it, I think of your fine rendition...that of "Sweet Leilani"...you did an absolutely super job on that tune live in the 'Castaways' !
No, I'll not be at the Convention in Waikiki.
We'll be in Hawai'i in late Jan and early Feb to escape the cold winter here. (Taking in NZ and the Cooks also! Eat your heart out !)
By the way, I haven't heard from John Marsden in months. Most unusual...is he o.k. ? |

Excellent news. I just got back from Waikiki this weekend, saw somwe steel playing that knocked me out, Alan Akaka, Greg Sardinha, Casey Olsen, Bobby Ingano. Can't wait to get back there. We were staying at the hotel next to the Queen Kapi`olani Hotel. It is at the quieter end of Wakiki real nice. |

Do you have to be a member of HSGA to attend? Would someone post the HSGA site name again so I can find out a bit more about the convention and possibly joining? Thanks in advance.

Steve... You don't HAVE to be a member to attend and enjoy...but hey, why not join and be part of the gang? You can join at the time you attend the Convention (or even sooner)...just costs $26.00 US, so go for it and welcome on board!
And Bas...thanks for passing the 'word' to John...I was quite concerned.[This message was edited by George Keoki Lake on 30 October 2000 at 09:16 PM.] |

I also have Basil's performance at the "Castaways" (thanksfully sent to me by John Marsden)...wonderful playing. Does anyone know where I can purchase other recordings of Basil? [This message was edited by Dave Stewart on 16 May 2001 at 05:46 AM.] |
