I recently heard Billy Bowman for the first time, on a version of St Louis Blues with Bob Wills. Fantastic playing-
I hear a lot of Vance Terry phrasing- not sure who learned from who. Can anyone recommend where to hear more? |

Consult the above list for his recordings with Paul Howard, 1947 and later.
He replaced the fantastic Slim Idaho in Howard's band. There's at least a dozen recordings. He then went on to make a lot of recordings with Wills.
I'd guess you can find them on Spotify or Pandora if you don't want to buy a CD.

That's Billy on the left with Jeff Newman, Bobby Garrett and Bud Isaacs. I always liked to watch Billy play because he had this subtle grin on his face while he played that said "Gotcha".

I liked Billy Bowman's playing. Most of his material was on the E13 neck... and he went for it!
The Bob Wills Air Shots recordings have some great playing by Billy on there.
Vance definitely stole a few of his licks on some tunes like "Rock a Bye Baby Blues". But Vance did take it to another level. They both played the heck out of the E13 neck, and that's a big similarity right there.

I got to see Billy up close and personal when he was in my home town with Bob Wills in the mid- 50's. He had his 4-neck Fender then. During a break he visited with me and wrote down the tunings of each neck (all different). I lost that paper several years ago. Does anyone know what tunings he used then?
