Some of you are probably well aware of this video. At about 1:08 there is a great shot of Myrick's hands during his take on The Hurtin's All Over with Connie Smith and Sundowners.

Absolutely one of the all time greats on steel guitar. I never got to meet Weldon but I understand he was a first class gentleman as well.

Here's Weldon from 1975 w/ Del Reeves. Did I just hear bells?

That was awesome, Robert! That's sucha great tune, but I hve never heard Reeves' sing it, and of course Myrick play it. I'm going to have to work on this one! Thanks.

No prob, Drew. My pleasure. After watching the first video, I've changed my picking hand technique to allow for the pinky and ring finger to be extended like Myrick's, which is also similar to the way Tom Brumley held his hand. Before, I had curled those fingers behind my pickin fingers, and I got a lot of power that way. But the other way is jsut a little bit smoother on changes, single string, descending ascending flurries, cross picking, everything. The knuckles still peak the same as before, it's just a slight variation, but offers better string coverage and a little different damping style.

It only really took a day, or about 4 hours playing time to where my hand automatically "assumes the position" now, but I have lost some stamina and power with those two fingers extended. Using different muscle groups. But I can build those up. Never hurts to experiment and always think about what we're doing.
