A guy who I play in a band with sent me these pictures. He says his grandmother bought it in the 50s. It seems to be in great shape. I don't know much at all about lap steels. He's wondering if anyone could tell what year it is, what it's worth, etc. Thanks for the help.

That's a lovely Fender Stringmaster. It's the earliest version, probably from 1954 or 1955 although there are examples around from late 1953. Some time in 1955 they changed the design of the bridge and tuners.
If you want to know for sure, take off the tuner pans and there should be a date (month/year) penciled on the wood. You might also find the name or initials of the person who put it together.
Looks in great condition. I'd guess somewhere around $1000-£1250 as a ballpark figure - unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on if you're buying or selling) a fraction of what a Tele or Strat from the same year, in the same condition would fetch.
Is he going to sell it or learn to play it? |

IMHO, the Stringmater, designed by Freddie Tavares, is the ultimate Fender non-pedal steel. I have a Deluxe 8 (single neck Stringmaster) a D8, which was my go-to steel until recently, and a T8.
