Hi I am new to non-pedal steel guitar. I like Roy Wiggins and am interested in the Mel Bay book called Memory Time. On the cover Roy seems to be playing pedal steel. I just have a console steel Pro Dual 8. Will this tab book work for me? Do you have this book? Do you recommend it? Thx. Keith.

Roy never played pedal steel that I'm aware of. I am a fan of his and even worked for him at his Nashville music store in the early 70's.

Roy accepted the pedal steel but didn't like them.

Jack:

The COUNTRY STYLE U.S.A. videos from the late 50's that were produced by the US Army and hosted by Charlie Applewhite featured Country stars of the time. The episode that starred Benny Martin shows Roy Wiggins playing a 'stand-up' pedal steel on one of the breaks. It is the only time that I knew of him playing with pedals.

Interestingly enough, the second episode to feature Jim Reeves had Jimmy Bryant playing fiddle and not guitar. I did not recognize him until Herb Steiner identified him for me and then it was obvious who he was.

Roy may have been using a pedal steel but I would bet he wasn't using the pedals.

I worked at his Lower Broadway music store, in the early 70's, and although the store was the Emmons dealer for Nashville he only tolerated them. His thought on pedals was they should only be used to change to a different tuning, nothing else (e.g. a Multikord). If he did sit down to one of the pedal steels in the store (and I can only remember one time) he played without using any pedals.

I did a lot of Friday and Saturday shows in the store (I played rhythm guitar) and Roy always played his D-8 guitar.

After looking at the referenced video, Roy is playing a guitar that had one pedal rigged to pull strings behind the nut (typical of those that Shot Jackson modified).

But, that goes against everything I ever head Roy say about pedal steels while I worked for him.

I have this book. The tablature is for 8 string, non-pedal, E13th tuning. It is also useful for a 6 string guitar ( simply omit the few times the 7th & 8th strings are used). It contains excellent tabs note for note for the songs it contains. Highly recommended. Very Happy

The book is for E13th non-pedal tuning: B D E G# B C# E G#. I've worked my way through a few of the tunes in it. It's really good! Mr. Green

That's pretty close to what we used to call the C#m7th tuning.
I used that on one of the necks on my T-8 Stringmaster.

The difference is the D note (7th string), which is really useful for backup chords. In the book, he uses it a few times for low harmonies.
