As a non technical bloke, if you have an amp on low volume, does it consume the same power from the supply as if it were at full volume?

I've had conflicting answers on this from experts.

Thanks in advance.

No, the louder you push the amp, the more power it will draw from the mains supply...up to the limits of the design, or until it blows up.

I'm curious, what were some of the conflicting theories?

Thanks Mike.

It's just that two people I asked gave opposite answers.

Well, true Class A amps actually tend to draw more current when idle, then when driven to max.
All other amp-Classes draw minimal current when idle, and increase power consumption the harder they are driven.

If you can work the "blowing up" thing into your show, people would come from miles around to see you. Whoa!

I had that happen onstage once, using an old ballpark tube PA for a bass amp...
