Here are a couple of pictures of my latest attempt at a lap steel. This one has a faux neck and almost 2lbs lighter than the last one. It has an alumitone tone bar and is definitely a keeper. I can't wait to hear it. Can someone please explain the best wiring configuration as I can't remember. Many thanks

Hi Brian,
I haven't had any experience wiring Alumitone pickups, but I'm sure that if you get in touch with the Lace website, they will probably give you details of wiring and the components to use. From the pics it looks as though it's a split coil pickup, so you could wire it for single coil or humbucking. Best of luck.

Your wiring depends on the electronic hardware you choose to install:
An output jack plug is a must,
but a coil switch and a volume and tone control can be omitted.
There is not a lot of space to install all of that. |

Since this guitar is made from 3/8" aluminum it has a slight inward bow. However it still stays in tune perfectly. Here is my question. If I reduced the length by 6" and fitted a keyless tuner, would that reduce the degree of the bow? |

Brian,
From a purely mechanical viewpoint, any reduction in length must also reduce the amount of bow in the "thin" guitar you're building. I would suggest that you contact Sonny Jenkins on the Forum for details of his keyless tuning heads and I'm sure he can be very helpful. His guitars and keyless tuners are shown here on the Forum. Also he's looking to fabricate and supply Aluminium or Wood tuners to the requirements of guitar builders.

Robert Allen's link is the place to go.
For this Thread's benefit
Orange is Hot to the Volume Pot In or direct output.
Green is ground
White and White with Stripe are the Coil ends.
For Non Split Full Coil fold the White back and connect the White Stripe to the Ground plane.
For Split Mode , add an ON-ON switch - center lug to Ground Plane - White to one side and White Stripe to the other side.
For 1/2 Coil only , tie the White to ground and the White stripe fold back.
Another Consideration -- These are about 30% hotter than normal single coils.
We find that placing them .160 - .170 below the strings (lower than others) will balance them and keep it clean.
Typical distance is about .125 (1/8")
Hope this helps. _________________ GeorgeBoards S8 Non Pedal Steel Guitar Instruments
