This video has been posted a couple of times in the Steel Players section, but I thought it also deserved mention in the non-pedal section.

The video looks like it was made in the 1960s. She's playing a Gibson ElectraHarp, but she doesn't touch the pedals at all. I love her playing! This makes me realize how much I Don't know about steel guitar history and some of the players.

Thanks Doug, that was very interesting and entertaining. I wasnt familiar with her. I have a friend in Az, Margie Mays, that might know of her. Margie is a wonderful non-pedal player and has been playing steel since she was 8. She plays the Texas and Az show and I think has played in St Louis...good friend of Scotty and she was a good friend of Jerry Byrd as well...sorry, didnt mean to hi-jack your post, just made me think of her. I go over to her house and take lessons from time to time...a wealth of info and talent too.

I've been enjoying Margie's playing on youtube, recorded at steel shows. She plays B11 tuning a lot, and she plays a lot of beautiful older songs that aren't heard much any more. She's keeping it alive!

Doug, here is a photo of Nickie with the Multiharp she bought new in the 1960s. Photo from A. R. Duchossoir's book, "GIBSON Electric Steel Guitars 1935-1967".

That was beautiful, Doug. Looks like her heyday was the 60s but the duet video looks much later .... 80s or 90s maybe.

Wow. I have a new favorite.
She is so still, and the way she uses her pinky to mute is very subtle.

I like her playing more in the video where she's not using the pedals. She sounds more assertive and more in tune. Heck, she didn't need pedals! I too like the European/French flair in her music. It sounds like the songs are in a minor key. I like that.

Lots of people ask about volume pedals and their use here on the forum.

Look at the way she uses the VP. Lots can be learnt from this. Notice the way she hardly moves it, if at all. Still sounds great don't it??

Thank you Chris, for this comment very fair !
Do not confuse " volume " and " expression "...
With his classical training, Nickie uses his pedal to
"express" his own musical intentions. But it is also,
of corse when it interprets covers of standards...

Very Happy

Jacques,

I have watched all of the videos on YouTube. They're magnificent.

I especially enjoy the closeups that show the instruments being played.

Thanks for sharing this music.
