Hi!
My name is Frode, and I live in Oslo, Norway. I have just become a member of this board. I'm new to PSG as well, and I have just ordred a carter starter to be my first. I have played lap steel and weissenborn for a little while, but I figured why not go all the way... I was wonderng on your thoughts on best learning material. A teacher would of course be the best way to go, but you won't find them in the yellow pages over here. What are the best video and DVD's on the market? and also very important : which albums would you recommend to buy?(legends and modern) One of the reasons that I would love to learn the instrument is Greg Leisz on Whiskeytown's strangers almanac album, but i guess I should also check out legends like Buddy Emmons.

Welcome to the Forum! This place is the greatest thing since the invention of the Steel Guitar, ask any question you might have and be sure to get hints, advise and support from the thousands of members...
For the material, go to the Instruction page and the CD & Tape page, b0b has everything you need. In particular, the Jeff Newman courses have enough material to keep you busy for a lifetime. For CDs, check out everything by Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green, Johny Hughey and all the legendary players...

Welcome, Frode.
Do they still include an introductory Jeff Newman video with a new Carter Starter?
As far as Newman's instructional stuff, it is very good, of course. However, many other teachers offer fine materials as well, and some of their approaches may suit your personal needs (and pocketbook) better.
Fortunately, it is usually possible to link to an instructor's website from this forum and read what he has to say about his different materials.
Something that may be relevant:
Carter purposely designed the Carter Starter's pedal and knee lever setup (which cannot be altered) to go with Newman's instructional stuff.
I believe the major place where that would be a factor, is that you will have a knee lever that drops your 5th string to Bb, instead of raising your first string to G, like some beginner's courses (especially older ones) other than Newman's would have.
However, many courses just focus on the first two or three knee levers anyway, so this wouldn't be a problem.

even though it might be outdated, Winnie Winstons book "Pedal Steel Guitar" is a good one - it can often be found on ebay
Jeff Newman - Joe Wright have good courses too

Outdated? Should I take offense?
I've often asked Oak to update it, but they say "no."
The "outdated" part is mostly concerning the sources (many mfgs. have gone out of business or changed addresses) and the copedants (which have been changed by now by many players).
Of course, some of the newer players like Joe Wright and Paul Franklin do not feature in the book.
But... it is not as outdated as it was a few years ago! By now, a good number of the records I suggest listening to that went out of print and are now re-released on CDs.
And the new books come with a CD rather than that terrible floppy LP!
The material itself is far from outdated. I still look at some of the arrangement Bill Keith did, and I'm still learning stuff from it.

| Wiinie, when are we going to be treated to the sequel, "Son of Pedal Steel Guitar"? I still go through your instructional book and relearn important stuff. It is a quality book, definitely not out of date and still the best value for the money out there. Do you know how many copies have sold total? I know I bought three! steve |

Hey Winnie,I remember that floppy LP! I just got back into the steel and I even found my copy of your book "Pedal Steel Guitar" but the floppy was missin. Anybody out there know how I can obtain a CD??? any help would be appreciated. |

The only advise I can give is to pay attention to this forum...you can learn a lot just from reading the different posts.
