Welcome aboard, Charles. Rick Mann gives lessons on Pedal Steel here in the Hampton Roads area. He is very versatile with many different instruments, so it wouldn't surprise me if he can also give instruction on Lap Steel. You can look him up here on the Forum.

Buck, Thank you for the lead. I'm really having some trouble getting started. I have been at it for a couple of months but don't seen to get any farther along. It took me awhile to build my lap steel and now want be able to use it.

| It's poplar which had a interesting greenish grain in it. It's colored with Minwax Island Water dye,applied the pinup, then six coats of poly. The tuning is c6 and I'm a fan of island music. |

Hi and welcome to the forum Charles, most assuredly you'll find all the help you need here. Love your guitar BTW.
May I recommend Jerry Byrd's Instruction course for steel guitar sold by Scotty's music. Not only does Jerry teach you thoroughly how to play, but a good many of the songs are Hawaiian. Scotty also carries Jerry's DVD which I highly recommend.

There is a lot of C6 instruction material available through the forum and from forum members. Up in the left hand corner there is a green box marked, "Instruction." You'll find a wealth of material. But Jerry Byrd's book is an excellent starting point. I began there, myself.

Hi Charles,
I'm a relatively new player like yourself, after many years playing "normal" guitar. You could do no better than look at Doug Beaumier's videos on youtube for inspiration. Once you figure out the intervals and scales of the C6th tuning you'll be able to understand and enjoy what Doug plays without a total brain freeze and even attempt some of his tunes yourself.

After watching Joe Dochtermann's YouTube tutorial on "Sleep Walk" with the "over the shoulder" camera view, I ordered the downloads (PDF and ZIP audio files) for his Learn to Play C6 Lap Steel set. (joedocmusic.com)
I just listened to some of Doug Beaumier's demo MPs, and I think his 25 Songs and 25 More Songs for Lap Steel Guitar will be my next purchase. I liked his cover of "Apache" and snippets of a couple of Christmas songs.

Before I discovered the Instruction page here (and before my SX Lap 2 even arrived), I ordered Jay Leach's First Lessons book. It's a good start, too. |
