This guitar is an Emmons set up with one exception. I raise my "E" with RKL. Can easily be switched back, no additional parts required. This is a particularly easy guitar to work on. Dana

Hi Dana,

Is the "welded" frame a big factor in what makes these guitars so desirable?

Thanks in advance.

I am sure there are more knowledgeable folk than me but my try. The earlier MCI guitars were wood with metal end plates. I am not sure who came up with the idea to make an aluminum frame and attach a wooden sound board to the top but that is essentially what this guitar is. The front apron and rear panel are aluminum covered with the red mica forming the "aluminum" frame. GFI I believe are built this way. Emmons had his fingers in the stew I think, and I have a DVD of him turning one of these (black of course) into a pretzel! Damn he was good! I suspect the reason for the metal frame was to combat cabinet drop ... not much chance of that! Curious to see what someone else may say.

Dana , I have owned five MCI guitars and for my money there is not enough difference in them to let the wood versus welded frame be a consideration. As I have posted before, Buddy told me he used an MCI on a lot of the Step One Production recordings. It really don't get much better than that.Listen to Christmas in Virginia by Clinton Gregory and you will see what I mean.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGr0ihI_HfE

I've also owned 5 MCI's, two welded and there wood. They all played great and sounded great. We would put them side by side here at my house and couldn't tell the difference. Ones we compared both had 705 pickups. I do think the welded frame guitars stay in tune a little better than the others. I don't like the notched end plate that holds screws to body that holds end plates. Don't understand why they were built that way, ease of fit I imagine. I took one end plate to my friend that has machine shop and he filled in the notch and machined it back down and we just put one screw hole. Made the guitar more sturdy and seemed like it stayed in tune better. It was a red MCI d-10 that almost every steel player in Texarkana has owned. We sold it several times for $1000, back and forth. It finally burned up in a club fire here in town. It belonged to Jack Matthews then. It was a great guitar.

I owned bunch MCI and EMCI guitars, welded and non welded, or whatever, they all were exceptional instruments, great playing and sounding guitars... I could never hear any difference between welded or wood guitars... they all sounded great to me....JMHO

Thanks everyone for replying.

p.s. When Erv says he's "very interested" in a guitar, I assume it must be very special Wink
