Tom's CD titled "In Time" contains one of the most awesome renditions of HW's classic songs I have heard. In this beautiful work by Tom, he does a short lick that I accidently stumbled on last night while playing the subject tune.

The lick of course makes use of the B pedal "split" with the knee lever that lowers the 6th string a whole tone. While I have used this split for 30 years and used it often to get that very needed (IMO) A7th, I never heard any one do it like Tom did, before his CD.

Well last night for some reason I actually did it by mistake, and just about dropped my teeth. Since I do not know how to do tab on this forum, the best way I know how is to describe it and then maybe one of you can tab it out for me in this thread, if you would be so kind.

I do it in G

("I tried so hard my dear to show, that you're my every DREAM")

Hold the "Dream" as a V7 chord.

1. 5th fret A and B down strings 5 and 6 sustaining, with the B pedal split as above.

now the lick! (Do everything while the strings sustain.)

2. Let off the split.

3. Re-engage just the B pedal.

4. Left off the B pedal.

5. Re-engage the split.

That is all there is to it. But when executed smoothly, (especially the way Tom does it), it is a beautiful embellishment of a simple V7 chord.

If you have the split on your PSG, try it! Note: It will require that the timing of the split be precise both engaging and letting off. This will take a bit of practice.

Or at least it did for me. Knowing you guys however, I suppose many of you alread knew how Tom did it and you do it already

But jes in kase

I'm sorry to inform you Carl; but Tom has never lowered the 6th string G# to F#, so therefore there is no split. Tom does Lower the 6th string a Half tone; but raises his 7th string F# to G#, so you might have to re-think how he did that..ha....YOu have until I get home from my Gig tonight to have it figured out and then I'll tell ya..ha...
Have fun.

Carl, in step 2 where you say "release the split", do you mean release both the B pedal and the knee lever?

Does the A pedal stay engaged the whole time?

What are the actual notes played? As I read it, you sustain an F# note on the 5th string while moving C-C#-D-C#-C on the 6th string. Is that correct?

I was under the impression (probably wrong) Tom played that medley on lap steel...
I'd better dig it out and listen again...

Ok,

I have really goofed. I am sooo very sorry, and I apologize. Let me tell you just how badly I goofed. Tom Brumley told me himself right in his own home, he did not lower his 6th string a whole tone. How in the name of heaven I forgot that I do not know. Oh well.

Ok, NOW I know why I took so long to find it. I do not lower that 6th string a half a tone. But I got the lick by splitting, to get it. Or at least it sounds like I have. I could NOT carry Ricky's case (I mean this). So he would be my expert on this.

Anyway, The A pedal stays down the whole time.

So let's start all over. IF you do not lower your 6th string to a G, but you do lower it to an F#, you can get the lick by doing what I said.

b0b here is what is happening:
[tab}

All at the 5th fret; A and B down; Pick strings 5 and 6 and let them sustain; then just change the 6th string's voicings.

holding a D7(V7) chord on the word "Dream":

5--F#~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6--C~~C#~~D~~C#~~C

Note: the C's are the "splits".

This is to me is a tricky move using the split. If you don't split; rather lower your 6th string a half a tone, it would work easier I think.

I will wait until Ricky gets back to straighten out an ole "wannabe" that should have gone into fittin' horeshoes or somethun else, so I wouldn't make a fool (or some other appropriate term ) out of myself.

I am soo sorry.

oh well,

carl

Dave,

I believed Tom only used his '37 Rick 7 stringer on "Steel Guitar Rag" and "Hawaiian Wedding Song" on the CD. But after the whole world found out how stupid I am, I am simply not sure any more.

Another way to do it is at the 4th fret, with an easy reverse slant:
F# ______________________________

D# ___4b-----------------3_______
G# ___________\__________________
E ____________\_________________
B _____________\________________
G# ___4---4#---5#---4#---3#_____
That makes the top note a little brighter, and I'm sure it's not what he's doing on that record, but it's the same pretty notes.

Don't feel the least bit bad Carl, the PSG is the most confusing, most wonderful, most exasperating, most enjoyable instrument on the planet

"It was the best of times, It was the worst of times, then I put my picks on......"

Yes Carl you have no reason to feel bad my Brother; as you hear the notes perfectly right, but you forgot that Tom told you he does'nt lower a whole tone on the 6th>Don't sweat it a minute; as it plays just as good the way you described it. Below is the move Tom played with lowering his 6th a half tone and another little lick he does under it, for good measure..ha.. Also the way you decribed with starting with the b pedal down and 6th lowered a whole tone; you can just let the knee off a half tone then all the way off then engage it half way and then all the way back down a whole tone, to get the same affect without messing with moving your foot in and out of the split at the last half.
6th string "L" is 1/2 tone

4._________________
5._5a~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6._5L~~5~~5b~~5~~5L
7._________________

Another move Tom does

4.___________
5._5a~~6a~~5a
6._5b~~6L~~5L
7.___________

Or using the whole tone drop; so 6th
string "L" below is whole tone.

4._____________
5._5a~~6a~~~5a~
6._5b~~6bL~~5bL
7._____________

Ricky,
Have you heard a Chris Isaak song called 'Except the new girl'? Tom Brumley does some excellent fills. There is a recurring fill that I just can't get, starting on D. I've tried every which way, got somewhere close, but no cigar. It's probably staring me in the face. If you do know the song, is there any chance that you could tab out that fill?
Thanks, R B.

Sorry Richard; I don't know/heard the song and I rarely listen to music anymore unless I'm playing..ha...so my CD inventory is none to lil.ha.
If you can come up with a clip of it or download the song on your computer and attach it to a email; I'll give it a listen and see what we can come up with.

Alas Ricky, that is something else that I don't know how to do. I am completely computer illiterate!
I guess I'll have to keep trying at the steel, that lick is in there somewhere!
Cheers, R B.

Jennings........Carl, my brain has sprung a leak, it cant retain enough to get it corrected......[joke] missing a patch cable to womewhere.....Jennings

This has sent me off in another direction! I have only had my present guitar a couple of months, and it came with the lowering the 6th a whole tone. I have not been able to fine much use for it in the stuff I play. So, I just cranked up the screw to lower it a only a half tone. Immediately, I pushed down A & B pedals, then let up off the B pedal, then engaged the half 6th lower. I had a beautiful 7th run. I LOVE 7th runs! I then tried the stuff just tabbed by Ricky. It works! NOW, thanks to the forum and changing from a whole tone lower to a half tone, I have a use for the 6th lower. This is what the forum is all about. Helping each other. Thanks Ricky and thanks Carl for starting this thread.

Jennings, I have been eyeing the Tascam CD GT-1 on eBay. You can pick up new ones between $100 and $120. These look like they would be the "cat's meow" for learing things off of a CD. Not only because you can slow it down 50% and still retain pitch, but you can set it to repeat one pharase over and over. Gotta have one. See if I have any money left after vacation this week.

Richard here is the lick in Question I'm sure>

3.____________________________
4._____12c~~12~~10~c~~~10~~~~~
5.____________________________
6._12b~~~~~~~~~~10b~~~~~~~~~10
7.____________________________

Start by hitting the 6th string and while 6th string is ringing; hit the 4th string with C pedal(or whole tone raise like TB has)then let off C pedal and slide back to 10th fret and squeezin' on the C pedal after you get there then let off C pedal and then let off B pedal.
Have fun.

Your welcome Richard.
Next lesson is how to play the exact voicing Tom played on Together again; with Strings 4&6 instead of 3&5..ah...ha.
See if you can figure that one out; now that you have a sneek preview into the cool movements that can be made with strings 4&6 using B and C pedals, and there's a few hundred more> but then it will cost ya..ha .
