I thought you might enjoy my one and only Red Rhodes story.
Somewhere around 1983 I was playing a small bar near Denton Texas just north of Fort Worth. This bar was off the main Hwy and not easy to find unless maybe you were lost. Into the first set I noticed a guy sitting in a dimly lit area who appeared to be watching me.
The guy looked familiar but I was new at playing steel so I hadn't learned who all the big time guys were yet but I thought he kinda looked like Red who I had only seen in a magazine once.
We took a break and I walked over and he stood up as I approached him with this big smile on his face and I asked if he was Red. He laughed and said that's me.
He said he was on his way back to California and had turned off the main Hwy and happened to see this place and thought maybe they had a steel player.
I asked him to sit in and he declined saying he was enjoying just listening. He stayed one more set and waved goodbye as we were into the third set that evening.
One of the neatest things was that he was just a very down to Earth guy who made me feel like we were old friends. _________________ Cops aren't paid much so I steel at night. |

great clips. i remember that back in the earlier days of looking for direction in the steel world, red's style and tone resonated with me much more than some others at the time. |
