What is the "Crash Bar" style of playing? The way Speedy West did it? [This message was edited by Gary Watkins on 22 July 2004 at 05:20 PM.] |

That is slamming the bar on the strings for percussive effect, sometimes used along with the "doo-wah" effect with a tone control ( knob or pedal ). At least, that's what I think it means ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/smile.gif) |

Steel guitar talk is a language of its own. And, like any language, it changes over time with usage. "Crash Bar" means what Jussi said, and another terms I heard years ago that means the same thing is "Bar Slam". The term "Slant" in modern times was called "Cross Bar" in my day, and "Reverse Slant" was "Back Bar". And "Blocking" wasn't even in the steeler's vocabulary at that time. I have "blocked" strings by quickly lifting the bar, by stopping a string from sounding with the ring finger of my right hand, by letting my left index finger hang over the bar touching a given string, etc. I never gave it a name because it was just a part of playing. I suppose the advent of chromatic strings made it necesary to be called something. The one, single term in modern use that still bugs me is "Sustain." Regardless of all the discussion that has gone on on this Forum about "sustain" to me it still doesn't work as a noun. |

When I used to play Fender Stringmaster, I used to turn up the foot volume and bring the bar down on the appropriate fret to do some "comping".

Sustension? Sustenance? Sustainment? Sustenism? Sustenality?
Pick one!
