A couple of local steel players were kind enough to
recommend me for a Hawaiian Lua or whatever it's called.
They originally wanted a steel guitar to SOLO for the entertainment for their big event.
Just learned this evening that the steel guitar was
bypassed for a "STEEL DRUM". How 'bout that? |

A STEEL DRUM
If it's the type of steel drum made from a 55 gal. oil drum, they are used in Caribbean music. ??? |

Don't feel bad Ray. A booking agent called me about a gig for some displaced Texans who wanted authentic Texas music. Sent him a tape with 90 minutes worth of us doing, Bob Wills, Asleep at the Wheel, George Strait, etc. They hired a four piece rock band. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

Yes disappointing, but "Texas Blues" is a genre in itself. Maybe he meant this?

Ray,
It must have been a "really big show" if they wanted you to play at their lua.
Should have just sent them a whoopee cushion.
In some Hawaiian dictionaries,-- the word LUA is defined as a bathroom or toilet.
I think the word you or they were looking for is LUAU.

There's quite a distance between the "loo" and a "loo-wow," isn't there?
Apparently that booking agent Clyde mentioned didn't know Bob Wills from Billy Gibbons. He might have no idea who Doug Sahm was, either.
I've only "visited" Texas (courtesy of the USAF), never really lived there, but I do know they've got all kinds'a good music down there. |

Here's one somewhat along the same topic.
A jazz band I play with was booked next Thursday for a big Kiwanis dinner/event/festival. We had played for them before and it was a laid-back, good gig.
They called yesterday and wanted us to march (yes, march) down the building's hallway while playing and leading everyone into the main room for this particular event. We politely told them that would be difficult with an upright bass and electric 6-string.
They hired someone else. |
