Bought a nice Regal Dobro today. It came with this tuning:
D
G
D
G
A#
D
I found it nowhere to be mentioned. I like it, but does it make any sense???
And does someone know which tuning Jerry Douglas uses on his instruction video?
Also, does anyone remember Rainer Ptácek's tuning?
Thanks,
Martin

To me,those notes suggest a G minor tuning but I haven`t seen one like that anywhere.Jerry Douglas uses the bluegrass Dobro tuning aka.highbass G.From low to high:
G,B,D,G,B,D.That would probably be the best one to start with.

It was probably just out of tune...DGDGBD is low bass G...mostly used for solo or bottleneck..."bluegrass" tuning would be GBDGBD, Both low to high....But, if you like it, and can make music with it, go for it...G minor...could start a whole new style and sound!!!

Hi Martin. I've listened to some of Rainer's music. He was unique, and passed away way too young. I'm awaiting a CD of a live show he did here in the states...I believe it was in San Antonio. I purchased it from Glitterhouse, which is over your way in Germany. It might be on their label as well, I don't recall. He did some amazing things with tape loops! As for his tunings, I'd guess he used whatever he came up with for whatever song he was working on. The sky was the limit with that guy ![](http://steelguitarforum.com/smile.gif) |

Thanks guys for your replys.
Geoff,
nice that somone remembers Rainer. I used to work for Glitterhouse, that's why I'm familiar with his work. I think the live-CD is out yet. Did you check the GH-website? They reissued some of his older stuff.
My favourite CD is "noctures". It was just him, his dobro and some tapes recorded in an old chappel in Arizona. Haunting.
It's hard to figure out the tuning that he uses for me, but you're probably right anyway.

Yeah, it was recorded in Tuscon in '97. what I meant to say was that I have purchased it, and am awaiting delivery. GH mailed it to a friend's house in NYC by mistake. We ordered stuff from GH together once, and I guess that was the address they went by. There is some great music at the Glitterhouse site. Their compilation CDs are amazingly good, and amazingly inexpensive, and a great way to get introduced to bands/labels that one may have never heard of. |
