I have that same guitar, AND it's matching amp, same year 1947
This one:
Great guitars, if I say so myself....
This was my very first steel guitar purchase, I bought the pair for the amp,..... I didn't play steel, I didn't even know what C6 meant....it was around 1987...I got them both for $320.00 |

Freddy Roulette sometimes plays one similar to that:
An impressive instrument. |

I think Doug Beaumier has one too...maybe he will shed some light...I would be interested but I have a 1956 Fender T8 that I love, and dont really "need" another steel. _________________ Zum Encore, Remington D8 non pedal, Hallmark Mosrite clone, Gretsch 6120 DSW, Gretsch G5210T-P90 Electromatic Jet Two 90,1976 Ibanez L5, Eastman archtop, Taylor Dreadnaught, Telonics pedal, Squire Tele, Squire Strat, Fender Tonemaster, Gold Tone 5 string banjo, Little Wonder tenor banjo, 3 Roland cubes 30s and 80, Carvin combo bass amp |

I've got one I forgot I had, until seeing this post. Not sure of the year...I bought it at a guitar show in ATL in the late '90s, for $300. I remember being underwhelmed by the clean tones, but loving the slightly overdriven tones. I used to LOVE playing it, though...A6 on the close neck, 6-string open E on the far one. The A6 neck was the one I used to try and steal all of Lee Jeffries's licks...just thinking of those days makes me smile _________________ Zoom/Skype/Facetime lessons available http://www.atlanta-guitar-lessons.com

The pickups may be weak Steve.
Mine sounds awesome clean, and even better through vintage amps. |

The pickups on those old Nationals produce a very mellow tone (JMHO) compared to the sharper sounding Fender (Custom)... I have both and love each one for their distinctive sound. However, my favourite of all is the CANOPUS...a great sounding guitar. |

That link appears to be for a place in New York. I work about 10 minutes from Elderly in Lansing, so this piqued my interest, at least enough to maybe stop by and give it a test drive just for fun.
This guitar doesn't show up on Elderly's used steel guitar page: http://elderly.com/vintage/cats/185U.htm
Are these two stores somehow related? What am I missing? |

The link given for the National D-8 is Mandolin Brothers in Staten Island, New York, not Elderly Instruments in Lansing, Michigan. Both are highly reputable vintage dealers, but are entirely unrelated as far as I know. |

I've owned a couple of these in the past and they sounded very clean, but the pickups didn't have much output compared to my Fenders. |
Agreed. I have to push the gain and treble a little more with mine but it's a good tone all the same. |
