Sonny,

They come up on Ebay frequently. I think the builder lives in Florida, and the last on I saw, I think he listed himself.

Since it's not an ad, I'm moving this to the "Pedal Steel" section of the Forum.

Actually Chet Wilcox lives in Illinois. He mostly sells them on eBay. Haven't seen or heard one yet.

I bought a pedal steel(single w/ armpad) from Chet in August of 2003. Chet himself seems to be a very nice gentleman as his repoire and communications were excellent throughout the sale. He even sent along a video of him playing it in his basement. I knew something wasn't right when, taking it out of it's case(not too good either), a couple of screws fell off. I had trouble getting it into tune and the entire instrument seemed flimsy to me. Maybe he just made mine on an off month, but that's my experience with Wilcox guitars.

Hello Eric, don't let this situation leave you not wanting to play steel guitar, there are other builders who care about quality,
Chuck Back of Desert Rose Guitars builds a fine quality guitar and so does Mullens and Carter, by Bud carter and John Fabian, check them out and I will assure you that these fine guitars will not have screws falling out of there guitars. steveb.

Eric;
For actually less money than what those particular guitars are selling on e-bay, you can go to a reputable dealer and get a new or slightly used Carter, Zum Stage One or GFI. You can get them with three floor and four knees and they will do fine for any practice or until, If you are just beginning, til you are ready to upgrade.
Main benifit of each of the above named guitars, they arfe LIGHT and won't kill you toteing them around.
Go to Bobbe Seymours site and check out the GFI beginner and pro models he has on his site.
Go the to Carter site and check out their guitars.
Contact each one and ask specific question about what you want in a guitar.

Chet Wilcox just listed two more D-10s on Ebay, a black one and a gray one.

Bobby, you are right about Illinois.... I saw Jacksonville, and thought Florida.... my mistake.

Well since everybody's going to throw rocks seeing I'm a member I feel I should gather my stones only 2 need here. But I will refrain because I recently threw some myself.

Eric, who is this so called very reputable pedal steel restorer who stated, and I quote: "This is the worst put together steel I've ever seen"?

Don't you think you owe it to forum to tell who this "reputable pedal steel restorer" is because if he takes these guitars in on trade for good amps and effects I'm sure many of us have steels we may not like or are what we consider bad that we would also like to get some good deals on so I'll be looking for your post with a phone number.

If this restorer took these in and turned around and used these parts that you say are bad, I'd like to know because based upon your "opinion" I don't think I'll be buying anything or having him do anything for me! Please tell me his name, have you got his phone number for me yet?

Unless your restorer friend has a mill, he will have a tough time modifying these "so called" parts.

Now I don't know if Anthony Hopkins would want to be affiliated with this topic. Maybe he was the restorer you were talking about.

Honestly to here you say and I quote, "this a sweet revenge for me that I've been savoring for quite some time." sounds like something I'd expect to hear from a teenager, now really.

Eric you should have went to Mr. Wilcox and confronted him. That is the right thing to do. At least provide names and phone numbers so we can follow up on the claims you are making.

Damir, your remarks only add fuel to the fire, not helping to resolve the problem.

Now Damir lets just say for the sake of this thread that Eric and Mr. Wilcox had some dealings and Eric is not telling the truth, then you have assisted him in the character defamation of Mr. Wilcox's ability.

Now let me state to both of you the law so you are clear.

Slander
is a term describing defamation that you hear, not see, usually in the form of someone talking trash about you or spreading or repeating lies and unfounded rumor.

Eric until you document your unfounded rumors at this point, you fall into the category of slander, and you Damir are a accessory to this.

No rocks did I throw at you guys, just some friendly advice from a fellow past rock chunker.

Do the right thing and contact Mr. Wilcox and give him the benefit of a doubt.

It would be sad to see you guys active in the local judicial system. It could happen!

Good Day

I recieved an e-mail today from Mr Wilcox and to say the least he was not happy. Although I was not satisfied with his product, and was simply replying to another's post, this was no excuse to air such dirty laundry in detail. It was in bad judgement to use the Forum as such. My apologies to you, Mr Wilcox, and to bOb and all of the members of the forum. Thank you Dan, for pointing out that rash, impetuous thinking does no one any service.

I just made a remark on the picture.and it was supossed to be a joke and funny.I didn`t say anything about a pedal action or tone of the guitar since I didn`t try it.Now, being serious,I believe that this instruments may be good with a nice tone.I don`t know.At the one point in time I myself was looking at the Wilcox guitars but passed on it because I didn`t have enough info.I also appologize for my joke that was not understod.However,I wish the best to Mr.Wilcox and his steel guitar shop.

I tried to get Mr. Wilcox interested in building me a custom, out of the ordinary steel but he shyed away from it. Looks like he just builds traditional instruments that look decent from the Ebay pics and certainly sell for good prices. I can't blame him for declining since that usually opens up a can of worms to stray from what you are tooled up to build. He comes across as a pretty decent fellow via email. Looks like he is just a one man shop building more so for his own satisfaction than for profit.
Too bad one of his instruments can't be evaluated by someone here who would be fair and partial so that the true worth of his instruments might be more fairly known to all. There have been several inquiries as to his guitars and it is too bad that this thread might be so negative to someone looking into them. There are so few independent PSG builders that it would be a shame to discount one just because of the comments of a few. I have built 30+ six string guitars from scratch and can tell you that you cannot please everyone, one person who does not like your instrument will tell everybody about it and the person who loves your instrument won't tell enough! Also you can show one of your creations to 10 players and they will all have a different view of what you built. Very few players are really able to sit down with an instrument and look at grain structure, neck pitch, machine marks, etc. and really have a correct concept of what the guitar is all about. Also the set up on instruments is a very personal matter to players and has to be dealt with as such.
There are other comments on his guitars that can be found by doing a search on the forum. Unfortunatly these do not shed any better light and too me should be taken with a grain since it is not clear to me of the technical qualifications of the persons who evaluated these.

I do not see the implications of serious slander in any of the remarks made, just opinions and some a bit stronger than others.

I can tell you that it takes a talented person to build from scratch a pedal steel guitar. It does not take much to critique one.

While I can appreciate ALL the points of view put forth in this thread by each of the posters, I would expect to see nothing less than what Eric has said given the situation.

Regarding his first post, I would say that what he said is simply facts based on personal observation.

In other words, he didn't say something like, "the builder's a no good, low down, dirty-rotten so-and-so, who sews socks that smell."

Rather, he simply stated:
1) when the guitar arrived, I took it out of the case, and some screws fell off of it;
2) I had trouble getting it tuned;
3) The overall appearence to me was that it was flimsy; and,
4) I took it to a reputable repair person, and that person said, "blah, blah, blah."

Regarding the second post, again, Eric said nothing derogatory about the builder -- he simply stated his feelings about the situation, which in my opinion are understandable under the circumstances.

I too have wondered about these guitars and I would rather that someone with first hand experience shares it with someone who specifically asks about it, rather than keeping it to themselves. I would also be equally interested in seeing posts from anyone who has had a positive experience with the guitar.

I think most of us would agree that if somebody pays thousands of dollars for a brand new instrument and gets something that they see as not even salvagable, then it's quite natural and acceptable for that person to want to tell us what happened -- and to have somewhat negative feelings -- especially when one of us specifically asks about the instrument in question.

Just my two rocks.

I can not respond to the Wilcox Guitar since I have never seen one or heard of one, but I am probably sure that Mr Wilcox is wanting to know from purchasers of these instruments
if you do have any problems and he can make corrections to them to meet their needs, so if you do have a problem don't hesitate to contact him, to get it resolved. steveb.

Mr. Wilcox may be a "one man" shop but so are a lot of other builders. Bill Rudolph builds the Williams guitar. I have not seen any derogatory comments about his guitar on the Forum, only good things and raves. As far as I've seen, Bill runs a one man shop, unless there was someone hiding in the corner when I stopped in to order a new guitar. Our instrument is a very personal thing to us steelers. And I choose to deal with someone that I have the utmost confidence in. Someone that will build me a guitar that fits me and I can be proud of.
I have seen nothing on this forum that would point me towards a "Wilcox".
