Demonstrating the versatility of the 12 string A6 extended tuning.

The Steel Guitar Instrumental begins at 1:17 with a diminished chord at 1:51 and an augmented chord at 2:04. No slants required.

Very nice Dom. I have been playing 12 string steels since the mid 60s and about 5 years ago a friend and I built my own 12 string non-pedal steel and I love it. I am getting, age wise, to the point that I can't work the pedals as well as I used to and the 12 string non-pedal allows me to get certain progressions and chords without having to do a lot of slanting. My tuning is C6 with chromatic tuning a lot like the E9. With this arrangement I can get many of the E9 licks on the C6.

My goal several years ago was to be able to play Jazz standards on the steel guitar and accompany my self singing. I came up with a tuning that gives me Major, minor, Aug5th, Diminished, sus4, 7ths, 6ths, 9ths, etc. There are still a few intervals that I need to slant to play, but it is nearly perfect.

I record my own backing tracks to play along with, but many times I will receive a request for a song that I have no track for. In that case I will just sing and accompany the vocal with my steel guitar.

It is greatly satisfying to be able to do that, and the arrangement comes out very mellow and piano-like.
I pluck the chords and sweep strum some rhythms.
If I like the song, I will go into the studio and record a drum, bass, Keyboard and guitar part for use the next time. Over the years I have built a library of ~ 400 tracks. Mostly of these often requested songs.

I know many many songs from all my years playing in bands, and even way back in High School, College Choirs and musical theatre productions.

I like your words, Dom. Sounds a lot like myself. I am originally from the west coast and have never played east of the Mississippi and I don't limit myself to country or as is said Country Western. I do like Western Swing, pop, jazz and classics. Steel on my friend.

Hi to low:
F# D A# G E C# A F# E C# B G#

The D, A# & G strings are re-entrant (lower in pitch than the "E")

Notes:
Strings 5 thru 10 are the standard A6th tuning
strings 1 to 3 form an Augmented 5th chord
Strings 3 to 6 form a diminished 7th chord
Strings 11 & 12 offer many cool low pitched options, like altered bass, and a Major 6 add 9 (5 frets lower)

By skipping adjacent strings some super cool jazzy chords are possible.

Very interesting tuning and quite innovative, in my opinion.

I assume your 12-string was designed with this specific tuning in mind. If you only had 10 strings to work with (I have an old Gibson Century 10), what two strings would you omit?

I have really come to rely on the altered chords, so If I had to eliminate two strings, I would lose the low B and G#
