Topic: Microphonic pickup? |

| I just realized the slightest contact on my pickup is really loud - tapping it is as loud or louder than produced by the strings. In the guitar world, this is usually a faulty pickup, described as "microphonic" noise generated when the internal components become loose. I've got a George L - is this normal for this pickup? |

Might be how it is mounted. If the baseplate is directly contacting the body without any padding you can get the sound you are talking about.
Try talking or yelling into the pickup to see if it is really microphonic.
Micophonic pickups will squeal with feedback also. It is a very rare thing with Georhe L's.

The strings and pickup work as a system, so in order to accurately guage how microphonic a pickup is, it's necessary to remove the strings. If you remove the strings, and the pickup still acts the same way (being noisey when you touch or tap it) you can be certain it's microphonic.  |

"Microphonic" is not necessarily the same as "BAD" - it all depends on what you want the instrument to do.
The extremely microphonic - as in you can practically order a beer from the bar through it - single-coil ShoBud pickup simply wails, and I won't be "fixing" it... |

Yes and no - if im trying to dial in traditional tone, i needed to know that my george l's should not be microphonic. But agreed that microphonic can sound good when its supposed to. |

It works for me because I have two guitars, James, three out of four necks are "clean, "traditional" George L humbuckers, but I kept the microphonic single-coil in the SuperPro's C6 neck, where it really shines for the big rock spectacles... |
