| I never really thought about the actual chord progression. I sort of learned how to play it from Jeff Newmans C6th. tabliture from his old instructional album "Music to get C6th. by" "Hold It" is a great break song, and I never get tired of it. What is the actual chord progression? so I can explain it to others who have never even heard it before. Thanks, Tommy...... ( in the key of C ) |

Of course the progression can be substituted out the wazoo, but the basic 12-bar progression is:

I apologize for stating the obvious but Hold it isn't Hold It without the C dominant 7th augmented 9th chord.

Bands have used Hold It as a break song so much that what has become the standard version may have wandered away from the original somewhat. The original Bill Doggett version, as I hear it:

I've often wondered if Big E came up with the substitute Db7 chord or if he picked it up somewhere. a sweet touch
