I never really thought about the actual chord progression. I sort of learned how to play it from Jeff Newmans C6th. tabliture from his old instructional album "Music to get C6th. by" "Hold It" is a great break song, and I never get tired of it. What is the actual chord progression? so I can explain it to others who have never even heard it before. Thanks, Tommy...... ( in the key of C ) |

Maybe this should be posted in the Pedal Steel section, so more players will see it. Thanks, Tommy....... |

Of course the progression can be substituted out the wazoo, but the basic 12-bar progression is:
Tab: |
C/F C C/F C7
F7 F7 C7 C/A7
D7 Db7 C C |

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

I apologize for stating the obvious but Hold it isn't Hold It without the C dominant 7th augmented 9th chord.

Bands have used Hold It as a break song so much that what has become the standard version may have wandered away from the original somewhat. The original Bill Doggett version, as I hear it:
Tab: |
C7#9 F7 C7#9 C7#9
F7 F7 C7#9 A7
D7b9 G7 C7#9/F7 C7#9 |

I've often wondered if Big E came up with the substitute Db7 chord or if he picked it up somewhere. a sweet touch _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

Scott, The 7th sharp nineth was part of the original Bill Doggett recording. |
