Topic: Where is a "Safe" place to buy used Beard/GoldTone |

Hi Gang...
In the near future I am looking to buy a used Beard/Gold Tone Square Neck Dobro.
I know that if I buy used from Elderly or Janet Davis Music I am "safe". But there must be more places where one can buy with confidence that the used instrument that you buy has been checked and set up before it is shipped.
Any suggestions?

I have had a very positive sales experience with Janet Davis Acoustic Music, Russell. You might also try the Music Emporium in Lexington, MA...private shop that's been around 40+ years and is willing to work with you to find exactly what you want.

I think Russell that there are not that many used Goldtones in guitar shops.
I would think most owners sell them outright. The margin required by the shops would discourage most owners from trading them in or consigning them I would think.
They come up here, on the Resohangout and Reso-nation.
I've got one I'm going to put up for sale before too long. I wanted to demo it on youtube and I just haven't gotten around to it. |

specifically where to buy a

I don't know what you mean by safe, and most others probably don't either. I guess it depends on the depth of your neurosis. I have bought and sold numerous guitars on this site and all my transactions were great. I bought a Wolfe Reso on Resohut. Transaction was great. So if you have zero appetite for risk, stay with a major store, but don't expect a deal. They have to make something for their time.

that I meant that "Safe" was an establishment that
set up and checked out the mdse before it was shipped.
I was seeking to buy a used instrument.
What is so confusing about that?
I would think that there are more places than just Elderly and Janet Davis that are respectable shops
that have a good reputation.
So far only only one person has actually
read and answered my question.

The reality of the market is that the used Goldtones are rarely sold by dealers. They are usually sold by individuals.
That being said (and repeated), roughly 5% of the Goldtone resos are set up by the Beard shop. Those set up by Beard have a Beard setup sticker as identification. Goldtone set up guitars have a Serial number sticker. Beard set up guitars are not serialized.
I'd also recommend that you keep tabs on the Beard website and Facebook page for the occasional (cosmetic) blemished guitar.

Looking at Gbase, which is my go-to resource for vintage guitar dealers, I only see two Gold Tone Beard signature models, with no indication if they are used or not.
I understand your wanting to have a perfectly set up used Gold Tone instrument. There just aren't that many out there.

Go immediately to ebay, Gold Tone blem. There's a blemished PBSM for $700 new. PBSM means Paul Beard Solid Mahogany. Great deal. New, $1200 to $1600. Dealer is Gold Tone's blemished sales dealer. Check out the fault, check out the guarantee and then buy the sucker! Once they leave the store they're all blemished anyway.

I'd recommend NOT buying that guitar. Nothing "minor" about that crack.
FWIW Beard does not sell/auction blemished guitars through dealers or auctions.
Russell, you are new to the instrument. I'd recommend joining the reso specific forums. You'll see these guitar occasionally for sale.
If you are patient and if it is important to you, you'll score a Beard set up guitar.

Thanks for the info.
I did not want to go with the Ebay guitar.
I am not wild about buying an instrument
with a blemish/crack on the neck.
And besides...
I want to put the first divot/crack in my guitar!(grin)
I do check Resohangout every day.
I'm not in a hurry, I am learning and having fun
with my Morgan Monroe cheapy Dobro.
