Many years ago I had a Lab amp. An L9? 15" Electrovoice 15" speaker. I'm not at all a fan of SS amps, but this was the best amp I ever had! Sounded like tubes. Different transistors wired in a different way, I suspect, Put Peavey amps to shame, IMO.
I have a friend that has an L5 stuffed in a basement closet, and I can get it for a song. Is it the same amp as the L9, but with a different speaker combo? What Electrovoice speaker was the 15?

Many years ago I played an L-9 and the lead player used an L-5 and my understanding was that the only difference was in fact the speakers.

The Lab Series were designed by the people at Moog. Very good amps,
There is a pic which shows some printing on the speaker for one for sale at Reverb.

"EVM 15L" There's a data sheet for the 15L-II on the Web. Seems to have about a half octave more high end than an EPS15C - 8KHz instead of 5 KHz.
Just looking at pics, the L9 is a quite a bit different cabinet than an L5. Dunno about conversion to a 15".
I was gonna get a Lab possibly when I got the Quilter, but SWMBO said no old amps. |

John, had I known then what I know now I might had been happier with it. After the voice coil burnt up I got a Session 500 that I played for the next 18 years. IMO it was a good amp but I've liked other amps better. Just my opinion. Try one out, I may even like it better now. 😀

| John I played an L5 in the mid 70s with a Sho Bud Pro2 and a Telecaster. Am sorry I ever sold that amp! Simply Fantastic for double duty! Had 2 12s and the best onboard compressor. It also had a knob called multifilter if my memory serves me. That is where the magic lies on these amps. I will buy another one day if I can find it in mint condition. |
