Here's a video I shot this morning demonstrating how to play a particular PF lick in Don't Rock The Jukebox. The weird thing is I found 3 different ways to play it, and they all work equally well! So check it out, decide which one you prefer, and hopefully M. Franklin himself will set us straight. The lick occurs at 2:08 of the original Alan Jackson recording.

I don't have any way to make tab, so I'm going to try to describe this as best I can.
Where you are lowering your 2nd string on the half stop is a slide down 1 fret on the 4th string and then hitting the second string. It's not impossible, but difficult to engage half stops at speed accurately.
I'm thinking the rest is played like either #2 or #3. You can also move to the 13th fret where you move to the 11th fret and play it there too. |

Oh, the plot thickens! So now we have about 5 ways to do it, ha ha ha! Great!!!
I understand what you mean about sliding down one fret on the 2nd string, as this is done all the time by Paul, Randle Currie, Mike Johnson, etc. But that lick usually has a note going back up one fret on the 5th string, which is not the case here, so that's why I ruled that out. But yes, you could replace the 2nd string, 10 fret lower by moving the bar down one fret to fret 9. I have no problem getting an accurate stop on my guitar so I kinda like staying in that same position.
As far as fret 13, you mean hitting string 4 and 5A instead of string 1 and 4 at fret 11? That seems like a lot of trouble, no? You have to move further AND change strings.
So we have three option for the funky note (the F) on the 1st string, and two options for the note lowering on string 2. How many total possible scenarios is that? |

Thanks Alex! That 11th fret move really helped, I couldn't get to the 2nd string fast enough, so I found that I could slide the bar chromatically on string 4 to get the same notes. Before I saw you demonstrate your version I went down to the 8th fret 3rd string with B pedal to get the F note, but it's not near as efficient as your way.
I included the 1st lick to add some more to this post!

And now a sixth way haha? Oh why not...I'm just hanging out on a Saturday night. This is kind of unorthodox but keeps things moving from the 13th fret down to the 10th fret and I'm definitely hearing a bar slide...in this case from 13A down to 12A

I pull the first string a half tone with my ring finger and slide the 4th from 10th to 9th fret and play 2nd string at the 9th fret like Jonathan described.

I know for a fact that Paul is sliding down to the 9th fret and playing the 2nd string before going back to the 10th to finish out the lick. These are some other great ways to play the lick and opens the doors to other great ideas, but Paul did this lick without using any knee levers. |

I wanted to clarify, after Paul plays the 2nd string on the 9th fret, he jumps back to the 10th to finish out the lick. Yes, you can play the 5th string with the A pedal down and slide back to the 10th to get whole different lick. I learned a lot of these licks from learning to play the solo on pick it apart that Paul did on Mark O'Connor's New Nashville Cats album. |

The OP is from December 2013. Took you guys long enough, ha ha ha! I'll post an updated tab soon. Travis, what was that PF solo you posted on Facebook a little while ago, something about Jamie Lennon playing the first half and what not? I think it was in a discussion about pick blocking. |

Hey Alex. That was the solo from "Pick It Apart" from Mark O'Connor's New Nashville Cats record. Yes, it's probably several weeks back on the Facebook page somewhere. |

Here's an update on the lick we're discussing. Is that what you had in mind Dean?
