in the market for a new steel, leaning towards Mullen or gfi. What is the general consensus?

Ford or Chevy? It's all subjective. Between these two, I would lean toward the Mullen.

As Roger mentioned, it sorta in what you want. If you want a keyless, GFI gets the nod, if not Mullen would be my leaning as well.

Both make excellent PSGs, you could flip a coin to make the decision.

My 2 cents, YMMV.

Jon,

Don't have any personal experience with a Mullen but understand them to be very good guitars. Watch any Mickey Adams video and you'll hear how good they sound.

I do have a GFI D10 Ultra and can say it is a great guitar. Plays and sounds great, very precise mechanics that are easy to work on if needed, stays in tune and doesn't break strings. Also it is on the lighter side for a full D10.

Don't think you are gonna go wrong whichever way you go. Good Luck!

I've had two Mullen steels. One mica, one lacquered. I've had six GFI's. Both brands are superbly built but totally different animals. I still have a GFI D-10 that I will never part with and no Mullen. That's my preference. But I also prefer Ford over Chevy Winking

Comparing a Mullen with a GFI? Isn't that like comparing a Cadillac to a Ford?

More like a Cadillac to an Acura. Both very capable. One more traditional, one more modern.

I've owned 5 brands (never a GFI) I prefer the Mullen of the ones I've had. I'm also a Ford man. Good luck with what ever you choose.

I have a GFI Sd10 keyless, and have tried a Mullen. I'd choose Mullen.

Here's the Mullen that I use to own.

Mickey sounds good on the Mullen? Maybe so, but so does Tommy White on his. But surely that's 99.5% because of Tommy's abilities and .5% is down to the guitar.

Any of today's steels are dependable and well-built.

You should play both side by side and then determine for yourself. I think Bill Cooper sells both brands.

I had a SD-11 Mullen I bought from Tom Brumley. Nice guitar but after I played a GFI I sold the Mullen. Had keyed GFIs, but now have two Keyless GFIs. One for home and one for the road. I will never go back to keys again.

Roger, I beg to differ, (see below pics) but I suspect you meant all the major known brands.
Either Mullen or GFI will serve you well. Have both in our club and both men love them. Of course you can get GFI as a keyed guitar too.
