PLEASE excuse my ignorance!! I have got 2 guitars with humbuckers and I want the maximum in warm, soft tone - Do NOT want or need any of the other stuff that's on the amp I have now for distortion - Can anyone advise a small, 10-15 watt amp that has SIMPLE controls in the $2-300.00 price range or let me know if there just isn't one. Yeah, I know, but that's my budget - Thanks from an old man Dennis Brooker |

Michael - Thanks much!! I have a used, DANVILLE TEC20R with LOTS of knobs and settings I got as part of a trade deal - I think I'll consider the Fenders you've listed and see if anyone else offer suggestions - I just like to keep things as simple as possible - Dennis Brooker |

I also, like Michael get a nice clean sound from a Fender solid state, FM212 for my old Fender steel. Through the amps he suggested all have 8" speakers, which I'm sure won't give you the warm sound you want. I would try the Fender Mustang II (40 w 12" speaker). That sould give you give you wamth in a compact package for $200. It does have all the bells and whistles, but the main question is whether you can hear any digital repeats you might not want. Another route for simple. is looking for an old Crate or Randell solid state. It could be the problem with the amp you have is that the speaker is maybe a single 10" or less. Another thing to consider is an upgrade to the reverb in whatever amp you get. For $100 an EHX Holy Grail is the cheapest good upgrade IMO. I can't give you any specific advise regarding humbuckers. _________________ "Be Kind to Animals, don't eat Them"

And I might also have mentioned that I use the Fender FM 210 for a variety of steel and standard guitars. _________________ "For every expert, there is an equal and opposite expert." -- Arthur C. Clarke |

My remarks are still aplicable for standard guitar. To get the warm, soft sound you want, I believe a 12" speaker is needed. As far as the the Fender Mustangs II is concerned, you can do a search on this forum and you'll find some good words. The speaker is a Fender special design which is an Emminance Legend, (also called the 'gold label') an excellent speaker. It comes with more bells and whistle and watts than you want including a computer interface, but you can use what you want. It is compact and those bells and whistle can probably help you dial in the sound you desire. I'm not sure you can do better, especially at that price.
I've had a reissue Twin Reverb, Musicmans, Randall (all tubes) and my Fender solid state gives me a crisp and clean sound that sounds best for my Fender steel. For guitar my Randall is more challenging with more of a slightly distorted bite, but to get a warm softer tone, the Fender solid state wins. _________________ "Be Kind to Animals, don't eat Them"

I'm very happy with my Roland Cube 80XL for standard guitar. It has a number of effects built in but I mostly only use the reverb and it give a very nice, clean sound. |
Thanks Jim - I'll check it out as well - Best - DB |

Keep your current amp and put a Steel Guitar Black Box between the pickup and the VP. Next best option is a pot VP and a tube amp, but the SGBB is the one that works. |
