true tone pickups

i was just wondering if puting a T.T pickup in my msa e9th neck would inprove the sound
or , would a G.L e66 work too? like to here from all of you with msa''s that change out pickups

Paul-Do you have the MSA Supersustain II pickup now. I have that on my later model MSA Wood lacquer Universal S12 with the alum pocket and it sounds great to me, More like the old Sho-Bud sound, which I like.

I have hear so much about the Jerry Wallace True-tones that they must be pretty good....al

I ordered a D-10 in lacquer, wood necks, two tone w/custom inlay that I selected from Constantines. It is going to have 9 foot pedals and 10 knee levers (separate set of levers, both left and right knees, for C6th neck). Bill said it should be ready in a couple of months. He's working on 4 guitars at present and mine will be next. It's going to kind of a hybrid though. It's going to have the Tru-Tone pickups on it and Fessenden fretboards. Yes, that's right, Fessenden! I just love those longhorn fret markers!

I put a TT in an old MSA (originally had the SuperSustain not the SS-II pickups), and the difference was night and day. VERY nice sounding pickup! Made a HUGE difference in the MSA. Tried the same in an Emmons push pull, the difference was there, however the bar I played in a lot had some strange EMF interference... single coils were out on ANY instrument...still wish I held on to the truetone, though...

You need a screw driver and a soldering kit.

I just put an TT on my E9 to match the one on C6.
15 minutes to change either.
And totally happy with both.

No, I'm going to call my new steel the "Left-Handed Norwegian's Pretty Good Guitar". The only drawback, though, is that Bill has to build it with a 6 foot string length to get the name on the front!

the tt pu has made a significant tone improvement to my Mullen U12. I used to have a MSA Classic xl with
wood necks and the super sustain 2 PU's. The sound
was not all that good now that I look back I should have changed those PU' s to TT's.

My experience is with a MSA Millineium. SU12.
Came with an E-66. Great sound, but I was curious about other pickups. I popped in a TT and I really like the sound. I will not try to describe tone, but it is a thicker and a bit darker sound with the same amp settings. I have also experimented with the Lawrence 12-1. Darker still. All sound very good, and the amp has knobs.
My favorite is the TT.

I put True Tones on my MSA U-12 in place of the George L that was on it. The real difference I found was in the sound and sustain above the 12th fret, which was much better. The sound just seemed to die before, now it is much better.

I have a '76 MSA Classic S-10, and it originally had the Supersustain. I had an E-66 in it for quite awhile, then went to a True Tone wound at 17.5 (I don't think I would want it any darker-sounding).

The TT is by far the best of the three.

The only thing that may take a little extra attention is if your MSA has an adjustable height metal plate that the pickup mounts on. Unlike humbuckers that can have bolts mounted in the middle of the pickup, Jerry Wallace can't do that with the True Tone single-coil.

I had to be a little creative with mounting mine, but it isn't a big deal. By now I am sure Jerry can give you all the advice you need.

Make the swap to a TT and you won't be sorry, unless you absolutely have to have a humbucker. If I had to have a humbucker on my MSA, I would probably try something else besides an E-66 this time. Looking back, the results with that pickup weren't that great on my particular guitar. I know a lot of people think E-66's are great on MSA's, so --for comparison's sake-- I wouldn't mind playing some other MSA's that have them.

I'm playing an Emmons LeGrande most of the time now, and I'll probably swap out the single-coil it has on E9 with a TT sometime; it's just not a pressing issue at the moment.
