How would you like to spend a delightful week at Carter Steel Guitars' Mesquite, Texas facilities learning how to build and repair pedal steel guitars?
We are considering holding a week-long (Monday-Friday) seminar discussing, demonstrating, teaching, and providing "hands-on" experience for 8-10 people during the 2005 summer (actual week to be determined later). This class would be held only once during the 2005 calendar year.
Topics to be covered would include (but not be limited to):
- CNC and manual Machining
- Assembly
- Rodding
- Lacquer Repair
- Scratch Removal for polished aluminum surfaces
- Steel Guitar cabinet making, assembly, and finishing
- Restoration
- Setup for all-pull guitars (Bud Carter)
- Setup for push-pull guitars (Bobby Bowman)
- Adding pedals, knee levers, splits, and pulls
- On the Saturday of that week there will be a bonus 1/2-day class dealing with sales, promotion, and general business models for builders and/or repairmen (John Fabian).
Cost would likely be $1,200
Room and Board would NOT be included
If you think you would like to participate, contact John Fabian using this email link:

Ann, if I were a little closer to retirement, I would love to sign up. The knowledge would be great for my music store. Maybe next time around. I could drive up from East Texas each day for a week. If I could win the Texas Lottery this week end, I will sign up anyway.

Ann
I would love to visit for a week & get some hands on training.
I think it is a great way to see 1st hand just how this instrument is made from start to finish. I know it would answer many questions for me.
If my playing schedule will let me, I might just be at the Carter Co. for this event.
I would fly my plane down, but I do not navigate that well, I just know its south from here LOL
Great idea Carter is offering |

So those would be Mesquite roasted marshmallows?
I always prefered a side of beef over mesquite, but go figure.
I have more or less learned most of it anyway.
I bought an Old Sho-Bud and there ain't anyBuddy around who knows diddly about'm.
But this does seem like a cool opportuninty for someone wanting to really get under the hood and understand how a major manufacturer gets it done.
And would be the seed for a good home business.
Hey Ann, did you two get to Poulbot Gourmet??
How was Paris, still there?? [This message was edited by David L. Donald on 10 June 2004 at 04:09 PM.] [This message was edited by David L. Donald on 10 June 2004 at 04:11 PM.] |

Lee, I see your "investment group" missed the mark last Saturday just like I did.
Ann, keep us posted on this Fantasy Camp. I may be interested as it gets closer. I think I may find a way to float the cost even if I don't win the lottery. I have relatives a few blocks from the Carter location. Major cut in expenses already.

Hey Guys:
Here we have a major player in the steel guitar business offering a great opportunity to learn something. Then in response they get a bunch of wise cracks and sour notes...I never owned a Carter Guitar...But they have bent over backwards to reply to my numerous inquiries about MCI and a couple of other brands.
If there is a person at Carter who doesn't give the desired response I never was unfortunate enough to get connected to them...Just my two cents. If I was twenty years younger I would be there in a minute..

Willis,I met John and Ann in Enlgand again last month and they were very nice to be around. I also sent them to my favorite Paris restaurant.
So I definitely was not knocking them or this offer.
I was in no way being snide, even if the marshmallow comment was played off of.
More than a few of us here are wags of a high order.
But many of the funniest are also astute too and fine steelers.
I have no one around me that comes even 1/4 of the way to what they are offering here.
So I HAD to teach my self by neccesity.
But that said I am SURE I would still learn alot at this week long seminar.
A week at the Carter shop and you would be VERY far ahaed of most steelers. |

I'm just funnin'. Truth is, I think it's great that they're offering something like this, once again going way beyond the offerings of any other steel manufacturer, ever. But we can still play with the idea and have some fun... |

I guess I got carried away with the moment.
I feel so strong about folks who have struggled to make the pedal steel what it is..If they had a " builders hall of fame ",
There are some unsung hero's out there and a lot who have passed away, who should be recognized for their dedication and contribution. When I look at my old Gibson lap steel sitting beside my LeGrande lll, I can appreciate how far we have come. Now if my ability had been able to keep up with the technology..........Dream on...

I'd love to spend a week in a "Fantasy Camp" , however, I think that this builders week long course is also a very excellent idea. Certainly it hasn't been offered before.
Anyone SERIOUSLY interested in building should take them up on this. It may be a one shot deal.
How many times have we heard "woulda, coulda, shoulda?" |

I have no interest in learning to repair these mosters... I play til they fall apart and then either find someone to fix them or buy another one....
But I would like to ask a favor...
Mrs Mace and all the folks at lee mace's ozark opry told me to say howdy to Bud if I ever saw him or spoke to him. (Bud used to play at the opry back in the day)
Sooo HOWDY BUD WE'RE STILL PICKIN AND KICKIN AT THE OPRY!!!!!!
