First, thanks to everyone who's been responding to my earlier thread "What's the first thing to learn as a new player?" The feedback I've gotten has been very helpful - along with all the other threads I've been able to dig using the forum's "search" function.
One more question: Is the Winnie Winston/Bill Keith book http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=bsq164CQFY&isbn=082560169X&itm=1 applicable to the E9th copedant in the Carter Starter? I've not been able to find any weblinks that provide much detail on the book. Also interesting is the copy that Barnes and Noble is selling looks to have been republished in 1991. The original publication date was 1975 so I'm curious as to what (if anything) was actually updated.

| Yes, the Winston/Keith book applies perfectly to the Carter Starter copedant. As far as I know, all that has changed is that a cd is provided - my old version came with one of those terrible floppy vinyl records which used to be the standard way of including recorded material with a book, and long since eaten by the dog (along with my son's homework. About the only thing you will find in the book that might not seem up to date is the breif discussion of the C6th tuning, because after the book came out most players started going with a first string D. But everything about the E9, which is most of the book, is as good as it was the day it was written. Very good indeed. You cannot go wrong by getting that book - it is as close to a must-have as there is. |

I've kept my record tucked inside my copy of Buddy's LP (can't remember the disk name but it's the one with Remington Ride on it..) Floppy record still plays  |

Winnie's Book is the one that got me started playin steel guitar. it covers everthing from beginner to intermediate to advanced. great book!

Aside from the CD, nothing has changed.
Oak has a policy of not updating anything-- says it would cost too much. Most of the addresses for contacts and mfg are out of date. Most of the records, long out of print, are now re-releades as CDs.
The tab that was arranged by Bill Keith is a bit more complex than I would have used, but he was co-author and did a few songs as well as writing out all the "theory" chapters.
The stuff I arranged and played is easier to grasp at the beginning.
But Keith's stuff will keep you busy for years. After you've been playing five years, go back and look at that stuff. You'll learn a lot. Then wait another five and try again. He had a way of looking at voicings on the E9th that was truly mind blowing.
I'll sit tight and wait for my 38 cent royalty to show up.
