I'm interested in playing Western Swing and maybe some smooth Jazz. I have researched the various tunings by Leon McAuliffe and Don Helms and need clarification of the following.

E13 (high to low G# E C# B G# E D B) was used by Leon and John Ely of Asleep at the Wheel.

E13th (high to low E C# B G# F# D G# E) was used by Don Helms and Speedy West.

Is this two different tunings or a internet mistake? Which is better (easier) Any info would be welcome. Thanks, Ed

You have the attributions reversed... on Leon, the bottom and top strings are E's.
I prefer the Leon, since only two strings are doubled... it's probably the harder tuning, but it has rewards.

Stephan has it right... you have the two reversed, and the Don Helms is easier but in my opinion does not have the rewards as Stephan put it.
I think for the true western swing sound the Leon tuning is best suited, especially if used as a second tuning to a C6 or A6.

I just started working on the Don Helms E13th. I'm a fan of the high G# because it creates a distinct sound compared to C6th (for me) and hopefully gives me more options.
