Looking for songs that are reasonably well known amongst general public...not just by jazz afficiado's.... upbeat.. tonal jazz... not atonal jazz... shall we call it pop?

Something that would work in context of Piano and Steel ensemble. Doesnt have to be pedal steel oriented... I enjoy playing PSG C6 just with bar for single line and the easier slants.

Along the lines of the pop jazzier stylings of 'Secret Love'.

Buy Jim Cohen's CD. Lots of standards, done well.
Buddy did Secret Love on Minors Aloud. There's more versions of Autumn Leaves than you can shake a stick at.

I like big band swing tunes like "Satin Doll" and "Stompin' at the Savoy." Don't forget blues like "C-Jam Blues" and "Back at the Chicken Shack."

Tom, have you looked at the discs that Buddy and Ray Pennington did as the Swing Shift band?
Things like In The Mood, Perdido, Caravan, and on and on.

Pretty much what I do at steel shows. Would an arrangements course of Ellington and Mercer/Porter tunes on the intermediate level be of interest to any of y'all?

Thanks everyone for the song suggestions. Keep em coming!

Herb! I have heard a few of your jazz songs live with your push pull...and they were excellent in all aspects... and that wraparound was champagne to the ears. With my new2me push pull...that genre is just what that tone was made for. PM'd you for more info on your course.

(I have not had the opportunity to hear Jim Cohen play but I have heard great things...)

I am mostly trying to get a song options list made up to go through with the accompaniest in a shortlisting process.

What exactly does that mean? I'm just kidding; I'm wondering what the accompanist's short list is like.

For some reason I'm thinking George Shearing, Latin Lace, songs like The Moon Was Yellow, Sand in My Shoes; and yes, Perfidia came to mind.
Which brings to mind some Ventures tunes.

You must examine Jim Cohen's vault. Neutral

Herb
I would definately be interested in such an arrangement course you would offer...all of your courses are well done, and I know this would be no exception...I always enjoy your sets at the steel shows for the variety of music that you play so well.

Herb, I'd be interested in an intermediate jazz tunes course depending on the tunes. If there is anyway before hand you could list possible tunes in the book, I'd love to see them. Thanks, steve t
