My experience is, there is no federal import tax but a few states charge a state tax. I hope that answers your question.

States only charge a tax from a dealer within the same state. No tax should be paid on this one to the states.

I pay the federal tax when guitars come up into Canada...but no customs duties per se...just the fee for customs clearance processing by the ship company. I have always wondered if the USA government has a general tax on items entering the US.

Thanks, Tom; is it usually a set fee or percentage of the cost of the item that you pay? I assume it would be a set fee. stevet

Steve

bringing steel guitars into Ontario from the USA involves a tax of 13%

This HST ( harmonized sales tax ) is a combined federal and provincial tax paid on all goods purchased in Canada or imported into Canada.

The actual tax paid is calculated on the price paid ( including shipping) times 13%

BOB,

PLEASE CLOSE

It looks like my listing to sell my guitar has turned into a dissertation on importing guitars into Canada which is just confusing the issue and not exactly conducive to me selling my instrument.

But for clarification, the guitar is already in Canada so no taxes are applicable if sold in Canada.

And no, the US federal government does not charge duty or tax on importing a Canadian made product from Canada into the US. Courier companies will charge to clear the item through US customs but if the instrument is shipped via United Stated Postal System, there is no charge for customs clearance.

BOB PLEASE CLOSE THIS POSTING. I'LL REPOST THE GUITAR AT A LATER DATE>

Sorry Paul, but I thought my question was a legitimate one as it concerned possible extra cost to a possible buyer (me in this case) if this were exported to the USA. I certainly meant no offense; I will do a different post on this question.

Thanks, Michael for mentioning that "harmonized sales tax" of 13% of an item's cost of goods imported to Canada which would seem to go against the NAFTA TREATY's intent. I'll post in another thread to try to find out if the USA has any such tax or duty for imports from Canada. stevet
