I'm interested in playing Western Swing and maybe some smooth Jazz. I have researched the various tunings by Leon McAuliffe and Don Helms and need clarification of the following.
E13 (high to low G# E C# B G# E D B) was used by Leon and John Ely of Asleep at the Wheel.
E13th (high to low E C# B G# F# D G# E) was used by Don Helms and Speedy West.
Is this two different tunings or a internet mistake? Which is better (easier) Any info would be welcome. Thanks, Ed |

You have the attributions reversed... on Leon, the bottom and top strings are E's.
I prefer the Leon, since only two strings are doubled... it's probably the harder tuning, but it has rewards. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

Stephan has it right... you have the two reversed, and the Don Helms is easier but in my opinion does not have the rewards as Stephan put it.
I think for the true western swing sound the Leon tuning is best suited, especially if used as a second tuning to a C6 or A6. |

I just started working on the Don Helms E13th. I'm a fan of the high G# because it creates a distinct sound compared to C6th (for me) and hopefully gives me more options. |
