Hi Guys...
I went ahead and bought a "used" Morgan Monroe Square Neck Resonator Guitar from the GC. I know it's a way lower end unit. But What the Hell it cost me $199.99 plus shipping.
It came with a hard case, looks like it's brand new and in the case was...ready for this...
Three thumb picks and one finger pick!
Hmmmm previous owner had a strange anatomy!
I do have 45 years of playing acoustic and electric
guitar, I can fake it on bass, I used to play a little mandolin (wait...all mandolins are little) and I have recently learned the real basics of C6th Lap Steel
Now I have two questions...
The "Dobro" of course needs up grades.
#14 Spider, Cone (Beard or Quarterman) Bridge and Saddle.
Where is the best place to buy the up grades?
Can I get them as a "Package" at a better price?
And the other question....
I have posted earlier about tuning this to C6th
I have bought the proper gauge strings to do this.
I am not looking to play Bluegrass.
So I am planning on using the C6th tuning.
I'm wondering what will give me less grief...
Just playing the unit in C6th
Or
Biting the bullet and go about learning both the Lap Steel in C6th and the Dobro in G?
Thanks....

Hi again....
On the inter net there seems to be no real opinion as to what is better, the Beard or the Quarterman Cone.
Any opinions?
I am going to replace the Nut and Saddles and Cone right away. I'll have to wait until next month to get the Spider Bridge. (just had to spend mucho $$$ on my car repairs!) _________________ R.E. Baker

I would put a Beard Legend cone in it and replace the nut with one from Beard already slotted. Good price for it Russell |

If you are going to replace the spider later, I would wait on replacing the nut and spider inserts. The old and new spiders might be of different heights (as could be the cones come to think about it). It is best to get the bridge inserts as high as possible and then set the nut height while keeping the strings level. |

if you're handy you might purchase the Beard set-up video and do the upgrades yourself, it goes through all of the fine tuning that you'll need to do, and then you'll have a good grasp on how to keep it running well.
While of course you can tune it to anything you like, I suggest at least trying G tuning for a while. I don't play much bluegrass either, but I find G super friendly for americana, folky pop, blues and just about anything singer-songwriterish. There's a HECK of a lot you can do with G, and there is a plethora of great instruction material available for that tuning to give you all kinds of motivation. _________________ Stop by the Steel Store at: www.markvanallen.com

I plan on doing the work myself.
I have been in the Tool Business for about 40 Years.
I tuned the Dobro to C 6th because that is the
tuning I just learned on the Lap Steel and I figured
why add more confusion by adding another tuning to try and learn. _________________ R.E. Baker
