I'm almost finished on a slightly different version of the aluminum FryPan, this one has a slotted head. Scale is 22.25", using genuine Grover 18:1 open tuners. The fret board and back plate will be polished aluminum same as rest of the guitar. String spacing is .400" at bridge, .315" at nut. Tuned to diatonic C (C-E-F-G-A-B-C-3). Also, the pickup is wound with 38 gauge wire.
This should be done in a day or two.

Congratulations on your guitar! I admire the work you have into it. Looking forward to seeing and maybe hearing it when it's finished. Now if you make a 6 string with a Rick horseshoe pickup, I'll get my checkbook out! A hog-out frypan! With a 5-axis CNC you could crank those out in economic quantities, although there probably isn't a big enough lap steel market to justify that. Great job, can't wait to hear it. |

Jason Lollar makes new Horseshoe pickups, and this can be used. Web site says availability is limited.
From visiting his web site,
http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=steel-guitar-pickups
the cost is $600.
I have made several 6 string fry pan guitars.

Yea, not cheap but very nice. I just got an 8 string version for a project and it was about a 6 week lead time. _________________ Some misc pics of my hand crafted steels

I know they're good, but to put that price in perspective, I recently purchased my second Ricky B6, a nice 1947, for $600 and had the pickup repaired and rewound by the Sage of Berryville for just over $100.
Wonder what the HogOut Frypan weighs? Doubt that it will fall off your lap, but if it does you'd better be wearing steel toed shoes! |

My Frypan weighs around 13 pounds. This can vary according to the scale of the guitar (22.5, 24, 25, etc.), and whether it has 6 or 8 or 10 strings. I can reduce this by routing out the neck. I can also route out the body to reduce weight. I can also go to a 3/4" thick neck and eliminate the bend at the headstock. Most of my guitars I do not route out, the musician wants the mass for the exceeding sustain this guitar produces.
I do have plans to make an acoustic aluminum Frypan, at some point. It will be lighter.
Do not drop this guitar on your toes.

Well, the Bakelite B6 is no lightweight and my Sierra S8 weighs at least 25 pounds when played on the lap. Not worried about blowing away in a big wind!
Looking forward to further developments. Keep up the innovation. |

I could not agree more. If its just a horseshoe steel that you want, the Lollar is not a cost effective solution. For me, short of cannibalising a vintage steel, which I would not do, I'm left with only one other option. _________________ Some misc pics of my hand crafted steels

From Lollars side those pickups are expensive to produce. Same with the Supro repro's. Not to mention the big fight he had to put up with Rickenbacker to even be able to sell them. |

I'm pretty surprised, at the price Wayne offers, people aren't knocking down his door for one of these....guys you should grab one of these awesome steels.. I'm working on the courage of recording a demo of me playing mine. _________________ Blues in a doggy bag, is what I got to eat! |
