Barry, Ken,
It's a misconception that artists expect to earn a living through sales and 'spins' of their albums. The main advantage the artist receives from these is the notoriety they gain through successful marketing.
Music artists learn early on, they'll earn the 'lion's share' of their revenue from touring. The amount of revenue depends on their touring contract (with the promoter and/or the venue), and to a great extent, their ability to sell a substantial volume of their own merchandise at performances.
They'll also earn revenue from the sales of contracted and/or non-contracted merchandise through their own website. Also, smart artists will copyright and/or license all non-contracted merchandise to protect their products.
Keep on pickin'!
