I never got into steel guitar of any kind till around 1975, then it was a D-10 pedal steel, so I don't know a whole lot about older lap models. I recently aquired a Dobro Lap steel [ 6 string ] with the ser# B-1216 on it. Would anyone be familiar with this instrument? I have been told that it is at least 50 to 60 years old. It is in rather nice condidion with the original case. I have not taken any pictures of it, but when I do, I will post them. Any info would be helpful.

Yeah, Ernie, you've got a piece of history there. You didn't state whether your instrument is cast aluminum or wood, its color, etc. That info would be helpful in dating it so please do post pictures. If there is a volume or tone pot on it, you can decipher the manufacturing date of the pot and that would be a starting place in dating the steel itself.
Vintage guitar magazine ran a fairly extensive article about these lap steels in the January 1997 issue (Vol. 11 No. 4) complete with photographs and written descriptions. I think with a decent set of photos of your instrument and the help of this article that a person could pretty well nail down the year of manufacture, or at least come mighty close. Post some pictures as soon as possible, OK?
