Why on this forum there is not alot talked about Pete Drake"s steel playing on so many big hits w/ no speed picking and banjo roll's just plain steel playing and backing the singer and other player's to get out a good product or am I missing something?

Hi Jerry,

He's not ignored, but you're right, he doesn't get the ink of the hot pickers. However, he was a master who had a knack of sticking his bag of licks in a song in just the right places. He also got terrific tone. You might be able to cop his licks, but few can match his touch and tone. He also played on tunes by Dylan and George Harrison plus every(?) country artist of the day. I also think it's telling that he was Billy Sherrill's number one call. Billy was arguably the premier producer of his day.
