Just heard a 409 in Zum over at Lynn Stafford's, oh my: clean top to bottom, great string separation, not edgey on top, the real deal. JD and Frank Carter worked with Dave on this pickup, sounds great.

Dual adjustable pole pieces, humbucker, quiet.

Go for it, my friend! You won't be sorry. I just ordered another pair for my Hybrid a few days ago after hearing what they sounded like on my non-Hybrid when Larry was over here.

This guitar is now a tonal bulldozer!

I've had the 12 string version, #427, in my Carter for about a year. After having tried most of the other pickups over the years, this one is staying in.

These pickups made this Zum sound more like a PP than some PP's do.

I have one of Bob Hoffnar's Tonealigner pickups -- an excellent pickup that also has two adustable pole pieces per string. The procecure is to first balance the volume of each string in relation to the others. The pole pieces should start out at the same distance from the string. Then, to increase or decrease volume, both pole pieces on a given string are raised or lowered the exact same number of 'turns of the screw.' You just find the sweet spot for each string so that it is similar volume to the others.

Once the each string is the right volume, if you want, you can EQ each one.

For example, to make the 3rd string fatter, you raise the pole piece nearest the neck and lower the pole piece nearest the changer. It's important to lower the one pole the same amount as you raised the other. By adjusting each screw by the same number of turns -- one is screwed in and the other out -- the overall volume should remain the same on that string... and you don't want to change that because you already set it up in step 1 above. Smile

By doing this EQ adjustment, you can fatten up the wispy treble strings and also get some growl on the lower strings by thinning them out a little. It's a really great feature to have in a pickup!

Larry, Lynn, anybody...have you compared the Telonics 409 to the Tonealigner? I've wondered if there is a significant difference between the two. They appear to be designed on the same principle with the same fine tuning technique. Maybe that should be a different thread, though.

I just put a set of 409's in and took a set of Tonealigners out. TO ME they sounded the same a little more volume on the 409's but both are quiet and clean.

I was not looking for a change in sound, just needed to replace TA so went with the 409 as I have heard them in other guitars and knew what I was going to get.

Dave Beatty at Teleonics suggested the hole in the Zum body may need to be enlarged to accommodate the lead from the teleonics pickup, which is thicker. Did anyone need to do so ?

Larry , Lynn, Paddy, anyone ?

Thanks in advance,
Steve Spitz

Hi Steve,

I had no trouble at all passing the lead for the Telonics pickups through the holes in my ZumSteel. In fact there was very ample clearance and Bruce had even chamfered the hole openings! Attention to detail like that speaks volumes about overall build quality...
