I have 5 pedals on all 3 of my pedal steels. I can always find a use for a 4th and 5th pedal.

If I played a 3 pedal E9th guitar and was going to add two more pedals, I would do the following:
1. Move A B and C to the right one pedal each respectively.
2. Lower the G#'s a half a tone on pedal 1.
3. Lower 5 and 10 a whole tone on pedal 5.
I would also have a minimum of 5 knee levers as follows:
LKL LKV LKR RKL RKR
F# G#
D# E D/C#
G#
E F D#
B A#
G# F#*
F#
E F D#
D C#
B A#
* split with the B pedal. Also use it with pedal 5 to create the PF pedal.

I would think the Franklin pedal in 1st left, then ABC
Maybe lower the G's and 2nd D on P5
addendum. It wasn't there, I don't think when I posted, I like Carl's idea a lot too.
Low the G's left of AB with Franklin p5[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 12 April 2004 at 08:58 AM.] |

I use 5 pedals on E9th also. P1 raises string 1 to G# and string 2 to E (don't use this change enough to use up a knee lever for it. Pedals 2,3 & 4 are the "normal" pedals (but in a Day setup). Pedal 5 is the Paul Franklin pedal for strings 5, 6 & 10. |

I like to split the Franklin change. I lower string 6, G# to F# , on LKV. Drop strings 5 and 10, B to A, on P4. Raise 1 and 2 on LKR. I raise String 6, G# to A on P5 for a unison with P4. I've been using this for quite awhile. I have the Emmons setup. |

On pedal 1, I use the Tom Brumley thing where you raise the 7th string F# to G# and then there's a lot of other changes you could add in the lower or upper registers such as raising your 1st string to G# also. My pedals 2,3, & 4 are the regular ABC (Emmons) setup. On pedal 5 I raise the 5th string B to C# and the 6th string G# to A# (Bb) which is very useful for some C6th type things with your E's lowered. I couldn't live without this pedal. Have a good 'un...JH

I see that just about everyone that's responded to this question has said yes but for me the answer is NO. I think most players reach a point of diminishing returns in adding changes to their guitars. Some people think that C6 is harder to play because it has 5 pedals. My view is that E9 with 3 pedals is actually the more difficult tuning and with 5 knee levers, splits, and half stops, I really can't handle nor need any additional pedals. Kudos to you guys that can use the additional pedals effectively in your playing. |

While I do use all 5 pedals and 5 knee levers, I don't think I ever use them all in one song. I have 3 or 4 different mental views of the guitar, and each uses a subset of the pedals available.
I never use pedal 1 and pedal 5 in the same song. That would be hard to do.

If I were to redo my copedent
I would put the Franklin O pedal 1st
then 2 A 3B 4C
and a 5th would be something that would work with BC logically
And/or with C or by it's self.
Haven't theoried it out enough yet, but it has been percolating a bit.
C by it'self is not as usefull as BC.
but with a companion pedal that is a logical jump relative to the minors of BC and could expand BC and C this makes good sense. |

I've had 5 for quite a while.
I got turned onto pedal 4 by Bill Keith. It takes 5 up a whole tone (like pedal A) and 6 a half (like pedal B). By itself, it gives a dom. 7th in the "pedal down" position.
I also have Pedal 5 taking the 6th string up a whole tone to a Bb. I use this often in commbination with pedal 4.
The G# lower to G is on a LKL inside, and the B to Bb is on my LKV.

Gary-Glad to see your post, all 3 pedal S10's should be 5 pedals, as b0b says, you will find ways to use them.
If i had a 5 pedal E9 tuning, here is how I would do it.This is my "Lean and Mean" 5/5 E9-E6-E13 tuning. All the E9th is there for most playing and you don't need a C6 neck, as it is on this same neck only in E6.
LL LV LR 1 2 3 4 5 RL RR
1-F#
2-D#
3-G#................A......A
4-E..F.......D#...............F#
5-C#..........................D#...D
6-B.............C#.....Bb..............A
7-G#....F#..........A......G
8-F#.......................G
9-E..F.......D#
10-C#.............................D
11-A...................Bb.........B
12-E...................F#
This is just one version, You could make it a 10 string by changing the 11 and 12 strings, or getting rid of the 2nd string D# and pull C# string 5 up to D# with a knee lever.
I know it works, you still get the PF lick with LV and RR. Only split, like Dan Gaylsh does.
Pedals 3-4-5 are your C6 changes in E6.
Just one idea. I am not going to explain all the possibilites. Look it over, figure it out......al

Where do you lower your E's? I have the 6 lower on LKV and lower E's LKL (Day setup) I'm having trouble lowering the E's and hitting the vertical at the same time.
thx

Bob, I have found the best place (for me) to have the 6th string lower (to F#) is on the opposite knee from the E lowers. I use this combination of the 2 so often that trying to get the LKL and my LKV activated comfortably is almost impossible. I tried the 6th lower on my LKV for a while and just didn't like it.
