I should add that I knew Pat Cloud well at the time, and I backed him up on jazz piano when he played Charlie Parker tunes. At one time in the 70's, the entire banjo staff at McCabes was left handed - John Zehnder taught beginning banjo, I taught traditional (old-timey) banjo, and Pat taugh bluegrass banjo.

Jack, did you ever know a left handed 5-string banjo player from Orange Country named Ron LeGrande? Ron played with "Aunt Dinah's Quilting Party" and also "Wild Oats"..........JH in Va.

Yes. Tom Sauber, Dennis Fechitt and Mel Durham played in those bands, too. I hung out at McCabes from 1959 until I headed north in 1981, and I taught old timey banjo there from 1970 to 1981. I'm still a trad banjo and mandolin judge at the Topanga contest. I got the steel bug in 1975 and was playing professionally within 6 months without pedals and by 1977 on pedal steel. I became close friends with Dave Ellson in the early 70's and played bass in bands with him in the mid 70's. That's where I know Herbie from. He split for Austin, TX about 1975 to play steel.

Okay, okay... I'll chime in. 
Jack, you've undoubtedly seen the photo of Pat and I at Santa Monica beach. Yes, we were good pals but only jammed together, never bandmates.
If the last time anyone saw Dave Elson and I play together, it would have to be 48 years ago, so my my, you do have an excellent memory. It would have to have been at the Ash Grove, no? Dave and Dan and I have been in touch periodically over the years. Matter of fact, I'm going to my 50th HS reunion in April.
I remember Ron LeGrande quite well! Also Bill Cunningham, fiddler deluxe. Dennis Coats from Joplin Forte. John and Bill McEuen. Bob Warford before becoming a country rock guy like me, Also the Golden State Boys, the Blue Diamond Boys, Don Parmley, Tom Mullen, the Gosdin Brothers, and the Haphazards (Tony and Larry Rice's teenage group), Dennis Morris, and ... ?.
We goin' way back!

Hi, Herb. It WAS a long time ago, at the 1968 or 9 Topanga contest. There was a band runoff between you guys and the Nitty Gritty Dirt band. I believe it was the last time they held it in the canyon. I was entered a an advanced old time banjo player, and didn't win anything. I fell into the clutches of Al Hjerpe soon after and got a lot better. I played bass, too in those days, and got a lot of gigs playing with Ellson until I left for Oregon in 1981. Dave was going with Carole Miller by 1970, and I played in a band with her and John Zehnder called Gross Junction (Carole said we were bigger than Grand Junction), so I palled around with Dave a lot, and followed your progress through him.
