I have access to a machine shop, and would like to try making a slide bar. I know the size and length I want, but would welcome input on grades of stainless steel best suited for it. Thank you! Rex |

Talk to Steve Gunder, here on the forum. Or mail me for his number. He was a machinist before he bought his Ritt. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

440 C stainless. it has a lot of chrome in it, and you can harden it to around 62 Rc. Also, you can polish it to a mirror finish. I've tried other materials and i have been disappointed. I am a maintenance machinist btw. |

Like Jacob says, the higher the chrome content, the better. If the piece of stainless rod you have still has a nice, shiny finish after some time in storage, it is probably OK to use. If it has turned gray in storage, don't use it. Another way to test is with a small magnet. If the magnet sticks, its pretty high in iron. If it barely sticks, it's higher in chromium and nickel. _________________ 1974 Marlen S-12 1968 Tele 1969 Martin D-35H |
