I like the music of Ennio Morricone here is one of his Film themes Once upon a time in the West.
A word of caution here for any beginners or new players watching this, I am a self taught player and you will see me doing a lot of forbidden things like playing open strings, playing out of position and a right hand floating like a Butterfly, anchored nowhere and searching up and down for the Tones I want to hear. If you do likewise you might find the Music Police after you.

Very nice, James, as always, though I cannot help adding that the mythology of the post civil war Western US as portrayed by Hollywood directors is for me incredibly tedious and patronising.

Thank you all once again for your kind words, and for coming to listen.
And Doug, I have seen your Guyatone several times on the Tube and enjoy your playing. This was the first Steel Guitar I ever bought in the early 60s when it was new, and like many others, let it slip through my fingers. But I always resolved to keep an eye open for one coming up for sale and was prepared to pay whatever it took to get another D-8, which I now have.
I love to spend time exploring the Tones coming from those Single Coils, I just love the machine.

For what it's worth, while the film was financed by a Hollywood studio and partly filmed in the US, the producer, the director, the cinematographer, and the screenwriters were all Italian. In some respects it's more a film about western films, than just another addition to that canon of Hollywood mythology. |

James, I notice that your Guyatone has three pickup on/off switches. Mine does too, except they are the kind of switches that roll forward and back. My favorite sound is the rear neck (two pickups) but with only the bridge pickup active. That would be the middle switch activated only. The tone is kind of hollow and the guitar seems to "breathe" depending on how hard or soft I pick the strings. That's a quality you won't find in modern steel guitars with humbucking pickups.

Doug,
I was comparing things too looking at your Instrument, I noticed you had rocker switches that also popped up on the dash of Cars belonging to that era, mine is a bit older model with small sliding switches. So far I have only experimented with Amp settings and there is such a combination of Modelling Amps its easy to get lost. That last recording of Once upon a Time had the Middle turned right off & the Bass turned right up and I'm still experimenting. I will experiment with the Pickups as you suggest.
One thing for sure, I would never go past Single Coil P/Us, I know people complain about hum or being affected by Strip Lights, but I have never had any interference or hum and I don't think anything can touch the Colour they put out.
