Has anybody got any settings they would like to share for one of these pre amps. I've had one for a few years and never managed to get a decent sound with it. Any help greatly appreciated.

[Allan,
I had the mark 1 for a while and have now upgraded to the Pre 1000
I found the controls to be very sensitive and a very small move in either direction has a fairly big effect on the final sound. You have not mentioned which volume pedal You use,the setting of the impedance knob should be full on for a Telonics or Hilton pedal and should be adjusted to taste when using a pot pedal.
Hope this helps.

I use a Mk1 preamp regularly and love it's tone. Settings are going to depend on a lot of things including: the type of volume pedal and how you have it patched in, your speakers and power amp, the room, your pickup, your touch, etc. My settings may not work for your setup and ears. I hope I can help you find "your" sound with it.

First, the manual can help you set the input impedance control properly according to your setup and type of volume pedal.

Then, I'd suggest setting everything to twelve o'clock, then dial in the overall level you want. From there, adjust the lows to suit the speakers and room, then do the same for the highs. The most critical adjustment is the mids. Spend some time there. You'll probably want a severe reduction in mids so start with the mid level control at about 9 o'clock and then adjust the mid frequency until you get a pleasing sound, then fine tune the mid level control.

The last thing to adjust is the BLEND control. A little goes a long way here. You probably won't have to vary it outside the 10:00 to 2:00 range. Now go back and adjust the overall level again since you may have reduced it via the EQ.

It's important to set the controls while listening at the approximate level you will need because the sensitivity and frequency response of your ears changes with the sound level.

Finally, try to avoid boosting any of the EQ contols (except the BLEND) much past 12:00. If you find yourself boosting highs, try cutting the bass instead and turning up the overall level. If you find yourself boosting the bass, try cutting the highs instead. Boosting will add noise and distortion. Cutting will keep things clean.

Good luck, and feel free to PM or email me for further discussion.

One more thing Allen:

Once you have your sound dialed in while playing solo, you may find that it needs some further adjustments once you start playing with the rest of the instruments in the band (to either stand out better or blend in better), or if the noise level in the room changes. This is where the blend control comes in handy. Go to it first for such changes. It's very sensitive and is perfect for this purpose.

Allan I had a MKI for a while too and had the same issues - it was very woody sounding and I could never get it dialed in where I like it.
Then I got the PRE-1000 and it was like night and day.
I believe the MKI is very good for bass !!!

Thanks Billy, Darrell and Paddy. Darrell, I'll try what you suggested. I'm struggling to get rid of mid honk.
I have an Emmons Push pull, MSA Millenium and a Justice ProLite and cannot get a decent sound with this unit using any of them.
