I'm a PSG "newbie", with a little under a year with the instrument. I play in an 8-piece band, and to reduce stage volume and wear and tear on my soon to be 64 year old back, I stopped using an amplifier on the last couple of shows, running my electric guitar, pedal steel, and dobro (for dirty sounds anyway) directly into the PA from a Boss GT-100 pedal and a direct box. Fiddle, acoustic guitar, banjo, and clean dobro sounds go directly into the PA via a Fishman Aura Spectrum pedal.

I should mention that half of us, including me, use in-ear monitors and we have individual stereo mixes off the monitor desk. We're down to the point that the only stage volume is from one guitar amplifier (from a guitarist that we sometimes have to ask to turn up to get him in the mix), drums, percussion, a B3 with a Leslie, and the stage monitors for the non-IEM users. Even the bass player is direct.

I'm pretty happy with the "dirty" patches for Dave Lindley stuff like "Running on Empty", but not totally happy with the tone and sustain on clean sounds.

Who else is going directly into the PA system with no amplifier, and what are you using in your signal chain?

In case it's relevant, my guitar is a student model GFI single neck E9, with an old Shobud volume pedal (pot was replaced before I bought it). I'm saving my nickels and dimes for an active volume pedal to hopefully get a more consistent tone throughout the range of the pedal.

Thanks as always! This forum has been a tremendous help in my efforts to learn this amazing instrument.

I played in a large church in Austin, Tx. for about 10 years without an amp. I used a Digitech 2112 tube preamp/effects unit, then direct to the board, through a Countryman DI. The 2112 had XLR outputs, but they did not sound as good as the amp output through the Countryman. We had Aviom personal mixers and in-ears. My son was the sound engineer, and did a great job of mixing. He was raised listening to steel guitar, so he knew how it should sound. That's all gone now, I only play once every couple of months at another church and use an amp.

I think I'd add a tube preamp, like one of Brad's

What Lane said. I use the Octal directly into the board but none of us use headsets. Everyone prefers wedges for hearing the band. We tried the headsets for a while but it took much longer to set up and people complained that they felt isolated.

Gerald, I use this guy, been using it for over a year now, works great, not even 3 pounds, and also has a drive knob.

I go to the tube directly from the volume pedal and then from there to a reverb pedal then to the board.

Beats carrying around an amp.

We had a couple of audience mics on an ambiance channel on the Avioms, this worked well to keep from feeling isolated. This worked well for us, but of course it's much easier being in the same room every for every performance. This setup would be a real headache in a different venue every performance. Using amps is easier.

I've been with a trop rock band that has used IEMs with an Aviom system for about 7 years. I've mostly been using a PodXT, and it took a while but I really like playing with the IEMs and being able to dial in my own mix from the Aviom. I actually put the PodXT in stereo into a Rolls stereo headphone amp, and bring the Aviom into the Rolls. I just purchased a V8 from a forum member and I'm looking forward to trying that next week.
