I have a session 400 limited purchased new about 1990 and it sounds fine. Has a Black Widow speaker and the sweepable mid control. I don't know about those stripes? Please be more specific.

I don't think the color of the stripes changes anything.
The one that people like more is NOT the one with Limited in the name.
The one you have is still good, but many like the 74-81 (or so) more. I have one of each.

IMO, the original Session 400 has dang near the fattest and warmest tone of any Peavey.
It used different architecture, with the EQ achieved through discrete components, while everything later used op amps in a chip.
To MY ears, and just subjective "how much does it make me smile," here's my descending order ranking of the Peavey stable:
Session 400
Session 500
LTD (although it has the same guts as the Session 400, the smaller cab reduced the beefy)
Session 400 Limited
Nashville 400
Nashville 1000
Nashville 112
Nashville 2000 (multieffects on board. Ick.)

Wayne,

I think it's been covered above, but - yes, the "sought after" Session 400 amps were built in the 70s, I believe. The Session 400 Limited was made in the 80s. I still have it, but I have to say that I don't like the tone of that particular one very well. It may be just the one I own, or it may be that the newer ones just didn't have the same sound as the older ones.

Swapping ICs can help.

Kit? I don't know. But here's the link to Peavey's mod for it. http://peavey.com/media/pdf/steelguitar/ses400mo.pdf

EDIT: the text implies that they used to offer a mod kit. Don't know if they still do. Ken Fox might sell a kit.

This is the reason why the amps from the late 80's are different from the green striped versions. The cabinet is different, and it changed the sound. The end.

Yeah, the Session 400 and LTD 400 are kinda unique. They are kind of the missing link or something. I wanted the ballpark sound of twin/bassman and these old amps get me there. Yeas I know, not the same, but really good sound for fraction of $ and easier to mangage. I leave my Session at church and gig out with the LTD. Just love them. More of the vintage sound, whereas the newer series is more of modern sound. They are all good from what I can gather, just depends on what you really want. To me the LTD 400 is the perfect amp because it has the essential tone but is so much easier to maneuver in and out of vehicle. Small quibble. The Session is the cadillac. I dont even count the 500 because of the weight. Its the real cadillac. Just remember, amps that old if not serviced already will definitely need some work. Caps, reverb, speaker, something will be wearing out.

Tom, the LTD (the 400 is only on the back) is NOT the same as a Session 400 Limited. The latter came out AFTER the Nashville 400 and before the 1000

yes. thats right. I forget the LTD doesnt have the 400 on the front. I see it called both LTD and LTD 400. Session Ltd 400 is IC chip amp that is different. Confusing indeed. LTD is the most practical. 50 lbs, great sound and small cab easy to manage.
