I just got a pre release copy of a CD I played on. In comparing the pedalsteel on some tracks and the Stringmaster (57 D- on the others the Stringmaster sounds so good its messing with my mind !

Hey Bob I know just what you mean. My ShoBud sounds great; actually all my pedal steels I've had sound great; but when comparing to a non-pedal steel(stringmaster;SSHawaiian.etc....) the sound is simply uncomparible. That is the difference in having the strings resonate on changer fingers; as opposed to a solid steel bar directly attached to the plate on a wood body.
Totally two different sounds and vibrations and I really prefer the direct sound of a Steel like the ones I've suggested after the pedal steel.

| Yea, I know what you guys are saying. I've played pedals for years, including a Sho-bud Super-Pro, but there is no tone like those old Fenders played through a Fender tube with no reverb. I still have some tapes from the Armed Forces Radio Network recorded in the middle 50's with Twitty, where I was playing a "49" Fender Custom tuned to a C6.(No hint of Hughey on there anywhere, but it wasn't bad for it's time) [This message was edited by Gene Jones on 04 December 2000 at 05:13 AM.] [This message was edited by Gene Jones on 14 December 2000 at 08:30 AM.] |

Hi again Bob I'm so glad my old Stringmaster you got from me sounds so good for you. Its the best sounding one I have ever heard those pickups in it are just beyond belief.
Let me know when the CD comes out I'd like to hear my old brown Stringmaster cranking!! |

I tend to not like anything I have ever recorded. But at some point I suppose there will be something that makes it to MP3 or some other public medium. I'll post it when it does.

| One of the great joys in life is to crank up my D-8 Stringmaster thru a Fender tube amp and hypnotize myself-not my playing mind you-just the actual sound-the tone of that guitar.I could listen to it for the rest of my life.If someone could capture the tone and look of a Stringmaster on a pedal instrument,I think it would be irresistable.You could sell a million of 'em. |

If these stringmasters are so good why does fender still refuse to make them anymore? The whole trend in insturments are to retro back to the old stuff. You would think they would jump in on this with the strinmaster. I know I would buy one. Would the custom shop build one?

| I'm guessing that, although there are plenty of people who would buy a reissue Stringmaster from Fender, there aren't enough potential buyers for Fender to actually do it. If there was a buck to be made from it, you can bet Fender would be churning out Stringmasters faster than you can say "Mexican Telecaster." |

| I've heard that the Fender custom shop will make pretty much anything you can dream up assuming you can pay for it.It helps to be a well known player(w/money)of course.I've wondered if the G&L custom shop would make one.As most know,that was Leo's last(and best)guitar company and the ASAT(Tele)and Legacy(Strat)are far superior to the modern top-of-the-line Fender counterparts.Therefore one would assume that a G&L Stringmaster replica(it would have to be called something else)would be awesome indeed. -MJ- |
