This is a bit off topic....but it's very late, so their is nobody to call, really. And I googled this question...& it was mostly "tech talk"...over my head.
I'm charging a brand new Lithium Ion battery, that was delivered to me today. It's for a Verizon wifi Jetpack.
Okay....how long should I charge a brand new lithium ion battery...the 1st time? The seller has a small note, saying I should charge it for a full 24 hours, the 1st time.
This doesn't sound right to me. I know, this use to be the case...when I got my 1st cell phone, around 2000...maybe earlier. But I THOUGHT that wasn't the case with the current Lithium Ion batteries? I think a salesman/tech @ a Verizon store, said with the new batteries...you don't have to charge that long, the 1st time.
I'm hoping someone is up late, or up early...& can answer my question now.
Thanks in advance! _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

Many chargers have a built in cut off when the battery is fully charged. Or if installed in a device and charged in that device most will have a cut off when charged.
After market (non brand name) batteries can be iffy and some do not have the internal protection that "name" batteries have. These should be avoided.
But 24 hours sounds excessive. |

Yeah, it does sound very excessive.
It's been charging since 9pm Arizona Time.
So, 13 hours.
Should I turn off the charging now?
Don't want harm the new battery!
Again, it Is Lithium Ion.

I would take it off charge, but that is me.
If its not fully charged the device you will be using it with will show the charge level. |

Thank you, Jack! I appreciate it. It's fully charged...so my wife just turned it off for me.
It's a pain, unstrapping myself from my new CPAP machine.
Last night was my 1st full night using it. Not fun. _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

There's a difference between initial charge time and subsequent charge times. The initial charge involves "conditioning" the battery for it's full capacity. Don't cut this time short or your battery will not charge to it's full capacity thereafter. The length of time for the initial charge depends on many things like the size of the battery, it's charger's capability, and so on.
You won't harm the battery by leaving it on the charger after it indicates it's fully charged. Lithium batteries require a built-in charge limiter that prevents charging them beyond their designed capacity. _________________ Best regards,

Thanks Dave & Mike!!
Yeah, I thought it was excessive...but it said to charge it for 24 hours.
I already stopped the charge. It's a Verizon Zte Jetpack for wifi.
So, it was charging inside the Jetpack.
Can I return to charging it again? It's been off the charging for around 2 hours now.
I did charge it for around 12 hours, after it said fully charged.

I think you're OK, David. 12 hours should be enough.
Since lithium batteries don't form a "memory", they can be charged whenever you feel it's needed.
It's also a good idea, every month or two, to let the battery completely run down to the point the battery level warning pops up (or it shuts itself off), and then fully charge it like when it was new....I'd leave it on the charger overnight. This resets the controller chip to compensate for the battery's normal, and gradual, decline over time. This will help you get the most out of any lithium cell currently in use in small electronic devices. _________________ Best regards,

Hang in there with the CPAP. Once you're used to it (quick learning curve), you will sleep better. Plus, it's a life saver. |

Thanks Mike!
The battery seems to be just great?!!!
Sure charges up fast now!!
My Jetpack is 3 or 4 years old, & I had the same battery in it, the entire time.
In the last couple of months, it wasn't holding a charge for more than 2 hours or so.
Got it for only $4.00-ish, on Amazon. It's not a counterfeit or previously used...so, I'm happy so far.
Even happier, to FINALLY be getting a NEW steel in around a week from now!!
I send Doug the check this week.

Thanks for the post, Bryan!!
It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But, I had to stop. I didn't use it last night.
I need a different or better mask. My nose is red & swollen, from where the mask makes contact. I slept good. Albeit, my doctor prescribed Ambien...so I could fall asleep while I get use to having something on my face all night.
I'll call him tomorrow. _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

I have been using a CPAP for several years now and I love the cool air in my face! Now I can't even take a nap very well anywhere else, I have gotten used to the mask and air flow. |
Thanks Don,
Yeah, it's not as bad as thought it would be. It felt worse at the sleep study center. Probably because I was hooked to a million electrodes, etc.
I haven't used it for 2 nights. The mask is hurting my nose, REALLY BAD. It was all swollen where the mask contacts my nose. Good thing it wasn't where my glasses rest!
The respitory supply people, are going to have me try on a 1/2 dozen or so more comfortable masks...hopefully sometime this week!!
I did feel better, when I woke up...& throughout the day. Plus, my sinuses were never this clear upon waking, as when I use the CPAP. It has a humidifier in it. That's a must for me, because of my chronic sinus problems.
